So we installed it. No problems with any of our MS s/w or Quark or IE or Mozilla.

Our accounting s.w has printing error. S/W supplier says "we are XP SP3 compliant"

So we restore systems to pre-XP SP3. All is ok.

Does this not prove that accounting S/W is NOT compliant?

We have stopped all Windows and Office updates until accounting S/W folks tell us it is ok with their POS S/W but I think this leves us vunerable if we ignore MS sucurity updates.

It may be strong evidence, but "proof" can be a bit more.

Does the accounting s/w fully support this printing function end to end? (I.e. do they specify this printer model as supported?) Or does it only support as far as its printer interface, and leave it to WinXP(SP3) to connect the printer interface with the printer drivers and the printer?

Can you print successfully to any other printers (e.g. any of the "free pdf" printer emulators)?

Not sure how it works exactly but I know that the acct'g s/w feeds Crystal Reports and then that goes to the specific printer. It could very well be that SP3 does not support the printer that is causing us the problem. (an old dot martrix workhorse that prints labels)

My position is that we bought the s/w and Crystal Reports as a package from our accounting supplier who is supposed to be MS certified and should be up-to date with all MS developments.

The fact that their s/w + Crystal Reports does not work with SP3 installed means, IMO, that they have to figure out why and provide us with the fix as part of their support package.

I would suspect the printer driver is not fully compatible with Windows XP SP3. Unfortunately, this is the time of the hardware fix. New software causes hardware replacement.

Not really as long as you've installed ALL the patches and updates prior to SP3, you should be fine. As you are aware, SP3 has added no new feature but accumulating previous hotfixes and security updates.
