I think it's lack of advertising. Apple has the whole "i" buzz going on.. sort of like lulu lemon for chicks, they don't even need to market. Most people don't even know that there are alternatives to the ipad. Regarding failures.. the new asus is crazy sold out.. they had to stop selling them from high demand. the xoom I think is doing much better than the media would have you believe.. the xoom forums are very busy and it's be released in more and more markets. Regardless it doesn't really matter.. all that matters is the OS itself. I don't think either of those can be a failure. The blackberry, I can't really say. It was never of interest to me just as I have no interest in one of thier phones.
Yeah, I don't think it's nearly that simple. I think it's lack of apps, lack of eco-system, lack of consistency between phone and tablet.... or more simple, lack of a differentiated strategy. Other than play flash, what can an Android tablet do that an Ipad can't.... short list, now, run the list the other way.... Apple built the market and will keep it until the competitors either beat them from a value perspective or differentiate the product significantly.

You keep banging on about lack of apps. That's a myth. Honeycomb specific, not that many but being added daily - lots more coming. Apps that work perfectly well, thousands.

Lack of consistency? What the fuck?? This has got zero to do with sales. I can't see a single person saying, I was thinking about getting an android tablet, but it doesn't look like my phone so I decided against it.
I actually like the lack of consistency between the phone and the tablet. That's one of the big pluses. The tablet acts different and it's appropriately different. I imagine they will blend more in the future but the way it works now is better. It feels like a tablet that was designed from the ground up, not a giant phone like the samsung tablet does. On the reverse I want my phone to be a phone, not a mini tablet. Have you even used a xoom?

You seem to think I'm anti apple. I'm NOT. I had an iphone. It's an amazing piece of technology and I tip my hat off to apple for paving the way and doing a stellar job of it. But one of the biggest problems with hard core apple users is their lack of willingness to be critical of the company. Because of the flaws of the iphone (and the way apple does business) I went looking for an alternative. Don't let the number of apps fool you. Apple many have more on paper but in reality the 2 are pretty much equal. Yet I can play flash on mine and that's a big deal on a phone and a huge deal on my xoom. It's so close to my regular browser that I use my computer considerably less than I used to. I can plug mine in a usb and drag and drop files. I can use it as an external hard drive if I wish to. I can run whatever software that I want to, even if apple thinks it's not in my (their) best interest to do so.

Once upon a time MS was huge and felt they knew best and now they are starting to sink. Apple should learn from the MS example and ensure they don't suffer a similar fate.

That makes perfect sense if you think an iPad is a big iPod Touch, if you think it's a different class of device that can be optimized for different tasks then yes, specific apps are important. That's why I keep "banging on" about apps, simply running phone apps on the tablet negates any advantage the tablet has.

I'm familiar with all of those arguments, I just don't agree with most of them - different strokes... buy what you like.

I don't want to be a systems administrator for my computers any longer, it's not that I lack the skill it's that I lack the interest - computing / communication devices are utilities, they should just work, I shouldn't need to manage them. Again different strokes.

How is Google going to monitize it's apps business? How is it going to monitize it's music business? I think they've missed key steps in the value chain - thus I think no one has caught Apple on the strategy front. (I think monitize is spelled wrong, perhaps it's not a real word)

I've used an ipad.. it's not that much different than a giant ipod touch. More convenient, certainly but not that much different. I like to see specific apps, and like I said there are more coming all the time. If an app is excellent and works perfectly well on a tablet, why would they remake it? I don't agree with your argument here. You can buy a xoom and be running just about anything you like that works well and looks good. If you didn't know anything about android phones you wouldn't even know they were phone apps. I know that the ipad wasn't over flowing with apps when it was released either. It took time for a large library to build.

I don't disagree with you about system maintenance. I used to like to tinker, now not so much. But I do like to have some choice. I also don't like being told what is good for me. iOS is far too ridgid. The amount of people who jailbreak their device is proof of that. There's no good reason for flash not to be available on iOS. NONE. Don't give me this it sucks bullshit. That's not relevant. People want it and should be able to have it, Period. As long as it's not harmful to the OS or the hardware, apple are dead wrong to restrict it. Who the fuck do they think they are telling me what I can't do with my device?

I do agree with you about google not having a well structured app/music system though.. It looks like Amazon might correct that for them!

So when is the fire sale? I would love a Xoom, but not at the insane price the are asking... and yes, it HAS to be WIFI. Getting a 3G account for a tablet is silly.

We disagree, no issue with that.

I would like to see one or two of these tablets really take off and give Apple some competition, right now all I see are followers, I'd like to see someone come up with something new.
