Hall & Oates - Family Man

[K. Cross/R. Fenn/M. Frye/M. Oldfield/M. Pert/M. Reilly]

Just curious... why do you call it a "Hall and Oates" song when you go through the trouble of LISTING the writing credits, and not one of them is a "Hall" or an "Oates"? :p

(...no, I'm not defending Hall or Oates or the lyrics, but I admit I'm a Michael Oldfield fan... the guy who generally gets credit/criticism for having written and recorded this song....)

The cake in MacArthur Park is a metaphor for love or something you hold dear to your heart. The whole analogy of the paragraph is that you lost something dear through carelessness and things cannot be the same again.

Bad metaphor nonetheless.
You mean it wasn't a REAL cake???

Thumper, Family Man was a top ten single for Hall and Oates in 1983. I copied and pasted the songwriting credits and lyrics from an online lyrics site. For Mike Oldfield's sake, I hope he collaborated on the music only.

Dude, I wasn't teasing you for not recognising the Hall and Oates rendition as a cover...

I was teasing you because, after your copy/paste, you post read like it a Hall and Oates song, only in the very next line to then list the real owners (writing credits), and none of them were a "Hall" or an "Oates"..... It was just FUNNY... kinda like reading someone referring to:

Britney Spears' "My Prerogative" (Brown/Griffin); or
Sarah McLachlan's "Blackbird" (Lennon/McCartney);

... just seemed like you just weren't paying attention... (and it's PARTICULARLY funny because we are talking about the writing...)

:D

Alas... no. It was released in 1982 on Oldfield's "Five Miles Out" album... with a lady on the vocals (Maggie Reilly, who sang a lot for him on that record), but... regrettably... Oldfield is first on a credit of 6 for the lyrics (I guess it takes an awful lot of people to write 'em that good...).

He's much better with the music.

P.S. I can't believe you have me sounding like I'm defending Hall and Oates... because as truly dreadful as these lyrics are, they are still better than anything Hall and Oates actually DID write....
