Let me ask a question to the politicos on Terb.

I don't know if this topic ever came up in a thread, but what do you think would cause a world war right now? I mean a real world war, not like the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq? Who do you think will start it? Or do you think there will never be another one?

:)

I don't know if WWIII will happen again, the planet as a whole is so much more connected with each other it's that much harder for any one country to really put themselves in a position to start taking over vast territories and causing a world war.

Probably will just have continuous regional wars here and there.

If it does it will be over oil or fresh water.
Probably starting in the Middle East (Iran will be wiped from the face of the earth by Israel), Europe will sit it out (and so will Canada) and then once China gets involved ..............

The threat is not high at present.

However, a word of caution is that most people (figuratively) never see the fuse being laid to the powder keg, nor even the powder keg itself until after it has blown up.

Witness the Murder of H.I.H. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife., the German Invasion of Poland, the Calling of the Estates General etc. . .

Take your pick:

Most likely, though, I suspect the next major conflict that has the most potential to start World War Three will occur in the South China Sea and/or the East China Sea. While other countries have claims in those regions, China claims the entirety of the South China Sea and East China Sea, and will not recognize the claims of other countries at all, which makes those areas ripe for conflict.

China is a rising power. Even more important, China is a rising naval power. I'm not aware of any rising naval power that did not eventually get involved in a conflict against the status quo naval powers.

The Americans would certainly have to get involved in the conflict, due to their alliances with Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Hell, they are even starting to get friendly with Vietnam.

As sad as it sounds...I really think that that pastor burning the Koran could have started it.There was a reason he got as many calls and rebukes from as many MVP's as he did.

You can note what you wish about terrorists, they burn flags, they behead citizens, etc etc..........you never see them burning a stack of bibles. In any religion, that pretty much means"it's fucking on!!!"

I don't know about all that. The world economy is so deeply integrated now, the linkages and tentacles so all-pervasive, that war among any of the major world powers would be a big money loser. And likely, nuclear.

Even as short as 70 years ago, the intertwining of the economies of the major powers was nowhere near as complex as it is now. If China were to attack the US, then China would be attacking over $400 billion of Chinese assets.

To boot, I think all the major powers have learned, from watching the Iraq war, that if the largest superpower on earth can't win a war against a poverty-stricken nation armed with rifles and home-made bombs, then none of the superpowers can hope to best each other head to head.

The Third World War certainly is unlikely unless you believe Iran already has and is stupid enough to use the bomb. Certainly Russia or China are not about to go nuclear about Koran burning.

I kind of agree with the water or oil reasoning. Canada has a ton of fresh water and oil. China needs the oil. So does the US. The US in a few years may even need the water and they will get it, somehow or the other. By that time, Canada will be a state of the US.

I can't see a war with Iran, since if that happens, the world's oil supply and prices will be drastically impacted. Also remember that Russia effectively controls a lot of European natural gas. If the US starts to muscle in on Russia or starts another of Dubya's stupid missile systems anywhere close, they might close off the valve to western Eurpoe and then they freeze.

Religion is always a possibility. Countless people have been killed over religion or some other form of belief.

I really can't see a world war happening. Regional wars will happen and there will be some cold war like support from the superpowers but I think (as said in The World is Flat) that everyone is too economically dependant on each other to mess things up with war.

Dubya's stupid missle system? You must have missed the election in 2008. Dubya is not the man in charge.

The missile defence system is still a go, just with some fairly minor changes in details.

Wow. A missile defense system. What a horrible thing. How could anybody live in a country that is safe from being destroyed by missles?

It does say a lot about the state of the Russian military if they are concerned about it.

You're kidding right????

Almost ALL of the heads of state in the WWI countries on all sides were RELATED... Most first cousins...

Connections notwithstanding... if the powers that be want a war they'll get it. That is until we drag all of them & their lackeys into the streets... Hang every last one of them & tear down the financial & disinformation machines they have built.
