If there was a special lesson during the last WC, it's that predictions are for fools. The pressure of a sudden death tournament makes upsets likely. On paper, Brazil looks unstoppable this time round. Last time round no one thought they'd win. I just have a feeling that they're not going to make it this time. Without forgetting what I just said about predictions, here are mine, with full acknowledgement that this really is no better than anyone else's guess.
Brazil - see above
England - The announcement that Sven is leaving is a major blow. The man's heart simply can't be 100% in this now that he's announced he's leaving. Without a coach who's completely focused, I don't see England going beyond the second stage. Then there's the insistence on starting Beckham. EVERYONE knows he should not be there, and therefore should not be captain. That should rightfully be Terry's job.
Italy - I think they're this year's Brazil. People seem to be writing them off, and that's just dumb, but great for the team as it takes pressure off. This is ITALY! If ADP keeps his current form and Totti isn't handicapped by the time summer rolls around, Italy is my favourite to win the whole thing.
France - A long shot, but they could surprise with a resurgent Zidane at the helm. Their iron man Makalele shows no sign of wearing down, and Henry is in his prime.
Germany - They're at home. That should say it all. I don't know if the current foolish spat between Klinsman and the association is for real, or a publicity stunt, but right now it seems Germany is also poised to enter with low expectations, which would take some pressure off, and that could make them deadly. Don't forget the old definition of football, "it's a game where you kick the ball around for 90 minutes and then the Germans win." In my estimation, they are the second most likely to win.
One Asian or African team may surprise, perhaps get as far as the quarters, but I don't see a serious contender among them.
Portugal - the team of my heart. No, I don't claim it's likely they'll win, but it's a solid team, and I can hope. This is definately Figo's international swan song, and he has said he's ready to leave his skin on the pitch for his country in an all out bid to end his career with the biggest prize in the sport. Our midfield can compare favourably to any other country's, with the maestro Deco in the centre, and Figo and Ronaldo able to switch sides at will. Our defense is solid with Carvalho and Andrade back there. Obvious weak points are the gk and leftback position. Also, if Deco is hurt, we have no replacement of that quality.
Argentina - they are so hungry. Crespo AND Messi up front is an awesome threat.
Other possibles, as always the eternal chokers, Spain. The U.S. , the Czechs. Anyone of these could go the distance.
