I could have also titled the thread:

Leylah Annie Fernandez moves up one spot in the world rankings.

Now it's up to all my other GF's to try to dethrone the new #1 Iga Świątek. She will try to keep her throne longer than any female player in history. You can tell she wants to be the GOAT.

At least Ash has never lost to Iga and won't ever unless she comes out of retirement. LOL Iga has lost every H2H against Ash.

I don't know what the record is but I predict that she won't get close. It's easier to gain points on the way up than it is to maintain the points.

Naomi Osaka, with her US$45 million net worth, should also retire. Her mental state is bonkers right now. Not enjoying the game in the least bit. Sad

You can take the girl out of the outback but you can't take the outback out of the girl. Ash's game looked so effortless she could have easily played till 40.

Her hometown is very different from the place in England.

...because?
Is pantalone cacato looking for attention?

If Ash Barty comes back it will be difficult, Iga is the youngest of the main challengers - she's only going to get better.

I remember the Roger's Cup in 2016, pudgy Ash looked like a peasant girl next to the glamourous Genie. Then she minces the Canadian pin up girl, it left me speechless.

So what else is new, Iga loves to cry.

I don't understand the fuss. Yes, she's retiring seemingly at the top of her game, but in terms of career I'm not seeing her in the 'legends' category.

She won a total of four singles tournaments:

AUS Open in 2022
Wimbledon in 2021
French Open in 2019
WTA Final in 2019

She also won a bronze medal at the Olympics in 2021, and a doubles tournament at US Open in 2018.

Why is everyone losing their minds over this? She's not even hot to look at. What am I missing here? Is women's tennis so thin these days that this is considered a huge blow to their sport?

Everything you say is true. I think the only stat that makes this significant is that she is accepted as #1 in the world. Even though her accomplishments are not among the pantheon of the greats, they were still good enough for her to get to #1.

And what makes it newsworthy is that somebody who is ranked 1 in the world in any sport and they retire from their game at the top is a very unusual occurrence.

Barry Sanders. Jim Brown. Who else? Maybe I'm missing a few but we're talking in a 60 year period, so it doesn't happen often. It's a man bites dog type of story.

I think it's because she has been #1 for awhile and is getting better and continues to improve. Add the fact that she's 25 and it's difficult for people to comprehend somebody leaving so much on the table.
