Unfortunately, I've been having the same problem lately. I cannot blame the Rogers connection since when I connect directly into the laptop from the modem, things are normally OK. I am considering calling Microsoft or Toshiba to see if they have any suggestions (e.g. different/new router, configuration issue, etc.).

First suggestion is upgrade the firmware in the router.

Second suggestion is upgrade the driver in your computer.

Thanks for the suggestions, Garrett. However, my hard drive was completely replaced about a month ago. I am using a one year old microsoft router - I bought a relatively expensive Linksys router not too long ago but have been unable to properly configure it. No doubt I need to work on my connection problems.

I have heard the cordless phones can interfere, what about changing the channel (frequency) of the router/card?
I think they have 10 or 12 different channels

What model of wireless router do you have?
Can you can connect a cable from your pc to the router?
Can you see the router via your pc? Have you changed the "factory" defaults?

Change the logon defaults (logon id and or password).
Make sure you can ping the router and that you've released/renewed your IP connection. ENABLE your Security by either turning on WEP or WPA. WEP is better. Create your WEP Encryption key (mine is 128 bit HEX key).
This will stop other people from stealing your WEB access.
Write down your Encryption key as you'll need to applied it to your Wireless adapter.

Check out the Router's Web site for any update and problem/solution information.

If you need more help, please post a request.

Regards

Mack

If its a D-link they actually have great telephone support, thats why i always recomend D-Link for wireless stuff, Im running thier eXtreameG connectors on everything including my PS2, ibook and PC and have very few problems. If my D-Link router works with the iTunes iPort then I will be really impressed.

This has nothing to do with your hard drive.

There is a program running in your router. You can get a new one from Linksys, and the Linksys router will have an admin mode that will let you load the new driver into it. Similarly, the wireless adapter on your PC has a driver. You need to get the latest, and update it.

Whenever I purchase new hardware, first thing I typically do is install the latest drivers (download, not the drivers it ships with). I find routers benefit from this more than anything.

Linksys also has great tech support, and if you squeak enough, they will even send you a replacement if the one you have does not work. Good luck

You might have to plug directly into it to configure.

You also might have to upgrade your wireless card. Also is the card a G card and set on AUTO?

anywhere I hang my hat
your problems may not be with your wireless connections at all. they may be in the configuration of your web browser.

verify that your wireless connnection is working by:

start>run

key in> CMD

this will bring you to a command promt

key in> ping 192.168.1.1

you can also use any other IP address that you happen to know.

you should get a series of responses and a message with how many attemps and successful replies you've gotten. If you have successful replies, your connection is working and your problem is browser related.

I've gotten to this point on my system and need tech sopport from microsoft or Dell. Not sure which at this point.

It could be a number of problems that can cause this problem and you have to analysis lilke typically when it happens, are you on line for a bit and then you disconnect, etc...

In my experience I was disconnected so many times that I really got pissed once until I overheard someone say that the frequency of the wireless card is on 2.8 MGZ which is the same as my wireless home phone. So I noticed that everytime someone called and we picked up the phone, my computer would disconnect. So I went out and bought a new phone on 5.6 MGZ and don't have the problem anymore.

Another thing every once and a while you have to reset your router by unplugging the power chord for a few minutes and press the reset button on the back of the router for at least 10 sec. and then reboot your computer.

Could be other things as well. Sarah, pm me with more specific details of when this happens and I would be glad to help. Better still I think I will book you and see if I can help. :D

I have scene this a few times with the linksys routers. Go to the routers web interface at 192.168.1.1 and then go to Administration window. The choose config management. In that window backup your configuration of your router to your desktop of your C Drive if you are on Windows or the Desktop of your Home Directory should you be on any Linux/Unix/OSX.
After you do this reset your router to the default settings.
Now you are going to have to reconnect to the modem wit hte default password which is admin no user name. after you have done that you are going to need to navigate back to the same config management page. From there restore your old config file back to the router. After that all should be ok.
