Got this link in an email... you need to be a student at an accredited college or university ( verification via student email addy.. EG.. sure.whynot @ ryerson.com ).. My daughter runs a Mac, so I'm going to use her account and get it for forty bucks!!

http://www.microsoft.com/canada/win..._id=can_co-win7launch-en_vanity_studenton.com )

If you know how to make that a clickable link, because I don't, please repost this with it in there.. There is also a free download to test for compatibity issues and let you know what you need to save, back up, etc..

Yes, one of my relatives works at a local college and I can get amazing software options for next to nothing.

Unfortunately this applies only to UPGRADE versions of Win 7 home premium or professional (I want Ultimate) so it also requires a current install of Vista.
As woopeckr would say "A Clean Install is always the best option for any O/S".

Most M$ Installs just need you to insert the Disk of the qualifying upgrade software during the install process. The actual qualifying software does not have to be installed on the PC. This allows you to do your clean install on the PC and M$ check the validity of your software upgrade.

:( The problem comes with purchases like my gateway laptop where they do not give you the O/S disk, just the software pre-installed on your PC.

One of the guys at PC Mag had a link to some source that actually shows Windows 7 as a patch to Vista and there is a way to just patch it....

In theory you need to be a current student (not an employee) at the college/University and MS may need proof of such (i.e. enrolled in 0.5 or more credits at time of purchase).

I did a new install of Windows 7 and love it - never thought I would really say that about MS. It was a flawless install, took 20 mins or so (after spending some time backing up my existing data and programs that I wished to keep) and everything seems to work fine (from the testing and usage I have made of it so far).

thats the problem with windows, when upgrading, the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation check your HD to make sure all your programs are legal. If your are running any cracked software, some people are saying that your windows OS will slowdown your computer over time.
