Southeast Asia's only nuclear plant has been inactive since 1986. But the Philippines is considering rehabilitating it amid renewed interest in pursuing nuclear energy to address the nation’s high electricity prices and energy security. However, resistance persists due to fears and concerns over safety and public health. Despite aspirations for a cleaner energy mix, feasibility studies are ongoing, emphasising the need for careful consideration before making any deci

Nuclear energy, when done right, is very safe. The Candu reactor has a great reputation. And, as we ween off fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, nuclear is the best option. The downside is the cost, but it can generate so much power fairly cleanly. Yes, there is nuclear waste....and we don't really have a solution for that, but it really is one of the best options.

Nuclear waste is where the issue will be...To have Nuclear power, you need all the necessary requirements to be able to dispose Nuclear waste, facility maintenance, safety regulations in order... that will cost them Billions $$$...if they will go with it...they will have to owe someone those funds.... Philippines has been riddled with corruption since the 70s up to this date...year after year they borrow funds you would think they'd be fully develop by now being geographically strategic. with 2 US bases that were close down late 90s...The country still owes the US billions (maybe trillions now) the only thing that keeps the country going are the people's resilience...Hard working Filipinos will go to every corner of the world to work the hardest dirtiest jobs to send money back home...their natural resources are being decimated, real estate almost only belongs to the upper middle class...Good luck having Nuclear Energy done right...

Sure, but wind/solar is much cheaper and there are more and more storage options.

In the Philippines case, it won't be cheaper...wind and solar needs a lot of real estate to generate the power a nuclear plan can generate...and Philippines don't have the real estate for those...

Friend of mine has a house in mexico. His whole neighborhood is solar panel based. Lowering electricity bill by 90%.

China produces very affordable solar panel. It should be the norm everywhere!

Talk to Scotland about their offshore wind.
You really gonna compare Scotland to the Philippines? 😂 😂 😂
you know Philippines is still not out of 3rd world status right? You know they're still battling China over some areas. You know they're still down the hole in debt...or maybe you don't know any of this...
FYI...they already have wind energy...
Operating wind farms. As of 2021, there are seven wind farms operating in the Philippines. The Bangui Wind Farm is the oldest wind farm in the Philippines, commissioned in 2005. Meanwhile, the youngest wind farm is the Puerto Galera Wind Farm, commissioned in 2019

This is what they need to supply energy to
The current population of the Philippines is 119,208,503 as of Wednesday, July 24, 2024

Wait, you think the Philippines don't have the cash so you think the more expensive option, nuclear, is better?
Explain

What will it cost compared to renewables?
renewables won't sustain the current population of the Philippines franky. Philippines is smaller than Ontario and the population is 120M...Nuclear is the most efficient that will not give up space...whether you like it or not...If there's any other way, they will probably won't go for nuclear too...

I agree, they are cheap, and storage is becoming more practical. But there are still drawbacks today. If they ever could do fission, which is supposed to be the same bang without the baggage, we'd be in business!

Will that be before or after cold fusion?
Just put in what's cheap and working for now.

If fission is safe and cheap, sure.

Solar and wind can be made cheap for the Philippines if
rich countries like Canada are happy to send them taxpayers'
money all in the name of fighting climate change.

Without reparation for the climate damage inflicted on
the developing world which leaders of the western world
like Trudeau hold themselves responsible for, the Philippines
would have to continue to rely on fossil fuel for generation of
bulk of its power output.
