WOW, I actually thought you were joking. You really are one of those hate mongering bible thumpers , aren't you?
I can't believe you fell for that. You are as naive as the bible thumpers.

How many born again christians do you think are serious TERB members?

And he failed to answer my question about the Pope John Paul II and his Parkinson's disease that God gave him. For what? What was his sin?

People like him, commonly called deniers, see only things they want to see. They can't accept anything that doesn't fit into their mind set.

Anyway, the odds are only about 25% that he is right about his faith. Other religions fare worse than that. The very fact that people around the world cannot agree about religion means only one thing: they have no clue.

Monty:

It looks like you have stepped into a bunch of logical fallacies yourself.

How do you calculate the 25%?

And what about that Job guy in the OT?

Brother's transplant gift carries unbearable cost So , why would god punish this guy's brother for a very selfless act? or, is he punishing the recipient for some earlier transgression against god?

People look for reasons as to why fucked up shit like this happens. Some times bad stuff happens , that's just part of being here. It does bug me when people say its part of god's plan ,though, or it because the person didn't believe. I actually find it rather insulting when I hear crap like that. People get sick, people die. life is nothing more than a roll of the dice.

If you call god bad luck , then I agree there is a god. If you win the lottery its not a miracle, or some divine intervention , you just got lucky.
At times there's no explanation other than wrong place at the wrong time.

Religion is, and always has been, a way for people to control other people. Simple as that.

Threaten eternal damnation if you don't believe or worship what I'm telling you to worship. Now as people have become more sophisticated with mass communications, the lies and stories required to control others have had to become more sophisticated, backed by a scientist or popular public figure or entertainer and somewhat believable, in order to keep people on edge. Gotta have a god who is the good guy. Gotta have a devil who is the bad guy. In the old days it was simple.

Today environmental groups such as Greenpeace and Bonno are just religion with a different face. McDonald's, the oil companies, K-mart...etc are the devil. The earth is warming because you don't conform. (Never mind that it has cooled and warmed dozens of times on it's own long before we got here) mother earth is god, pollution is the devil. Think about it.

Along with religion there is the constant need to finance the BS. Contribute is the real message of religion...so it is of environmentalism.

I thought this up myself, so blame no-one but me for this stuff.

I am anti-religion millions have died in the name of it. I an not anti-environment...but some have gone too far.

It's amazing to watch someone shoot themselves in the foot so thoroughly in one post.

The AGW movement, like it or not, is science based. Religion is not.

When you try and paint the two with the same brush you come up effectively saying "I don't like them so they are both bad."

And replace them with what for moral order and guidance.

I am wondering if anyone here has read any of Gould, a great scientist (even Dawkins admits it), who talks about his framework of non-overlapping Magisteria.

The idea is that science is really well suited to dealing with some types of problems, and religion with others. They get into trouble when they start stepping into each other's bailiwick.

Lol... I got one on the hook...always do. I assure you that my foot is just fine. I think that analogy is still in your own head cause i done follow it. Anyway, I never said science was bad...I said it is being misused. Besides all science is absolutely correct 100% of the time right? Just ask Al Gore. And science is never influenced by those who fund it right? Give your head a shake. And I never said they were both bad, i said they are being used in bad ways. People want to believe in god...so what if it makes them feel better then so be it, just don't tell me I can't do something that offends your god. As for the environment, I love nature and the environment and hate real polluters just as much as anyone, but I'm personally responsible i don't light cars on fire and produce anarchy in order to make my point.

...and oh I'll go a step further just to piss you off. The reference to Mcdonalds above is not really about their polluting ways...it's about how they are "killing people" from eating their food. A "Big Meal" is a product that they make just like Ford makes cars and Cambells makes soup, yet the diet/nutrition police hold them up as a virtual anti christ that is "killing our young people". They have a right to be in business and people have the right not to consume their food or do so if they wish. I don't need people telling me that it's bad for me to know that it is. McDonalds closed all of it's locations 3 in Iceland a couple of months ago, (franchise issues) but to listen to the people on the street talk about their demise you would have thought Barnardo had finally met his upcommings.

What I am trying to say is that people controlling people's thoughts and actions are all the same no matter what.

Keep digging.

So speed limits are the same as say brainwashing young children to hate jews?

Or the people who set the rules here at Terb are the same as oh...Stalinist Russia?

Or a parent forbidding a child to ride a bike in the street is the same as a child molester?

Logical fallacies? If you ever watched the Monty Python show, you would know that it doesn't make sense at all. I'm just fooling around here and very often just like to stir some shit.

25% - It seems to me that GG is a Christian. I estimated that there were roughly 25% Christians in the world. But, I checked the stats and found the actual percentage is some 32% (and dropping). My bad. Still no guarantee that they are right (and this applies to all religions). BTW, my background is Christian, but I grew up and found it very difficult to believe in those fairy tales. Of course, you can believe whatever you want, I don't care. It's not my business, as long as your beliefs don't affect me.

Job guy in the OT? What are you talking about? Sorry, I have no patience to think or do any research to find it out. Have more important things to do and that's definitely not praying to some higher instance in the Universe, who will punish me for my sins, real or not, but he is good and loves me. Yeah, right. Where is the logic there? And you are talking about my logical fallacies!
Was just wondering where the 25% number came from. But since you appear to be a proponent of science you should know that the truth is not found via a popularity contest. If the world was 50% christian and 50% muslim, it would not mean that they were equally likely to be correct now would it? Or if say 80% of the world believed in a religious afterlife than it would not make it 805 likely to be true.

And, I don't mean to be rude, but it is kind of hard to talk to someone about the religious beliefs on why people suffer if they don't know the basics. The storey of Job in the Old Testament forms the foundation of their concepts of why people suffer. But it is hard to carry on a conversation with people who don't, or won't understand the basics. It would be like talking to someone about football who does not understand what a lineman does.

And with great respect to whoever gave you your religious education, I am really surprised you say you have a Christian background and don't know about Job...

Why religion fails.

You mean besides the fact people are putting 'faith' in something completely unproveable and irrational?

I used to be a churchgoer in my younger days. And when I look back at it, I realize it was all a crock of crap. These people are brainwashed. Churches wonder why their enrollments are dropping. It's because the young people are coming to the realization that the churches can't help them. There is no god, and there is no way attending church will help you.

It's all a waste of time and effort to believe.
Just because you can't see, comprehend or quantify something does not for a second mean it does not exist.

The magnifying glass is very real but the ants are not capable of comprehension. We are the ants lost soul. To me, god is part of everything. I believe we will be judged on how we treat others, the planet, animals, etc. and what is truely in your heart. Are you an evil or good human being? That simple.

Peace be with you!

The NOMA thing is not Gould or Dawkins..., and in any case is wishful thinking. Religion commonly makes assertions about science, and science certainly can be used to ask questions about god or gods. If you have a religion that says nothing about anything in the realm of science, then good for you. But those I am familiar with do...and what they say is BS.

Ummm...actually it is...http://www.stephenjaygould.org/library/gould_noma.html and he wrote a book about it called "Rock of Ages." To suggest NOMA is not from Gould only shows you don't know much if anything about Gould.

And I would respectfully suggest that many churches, the UCC (Canada's largest protestant denomination), the RCC and others are moving closer to that model all the time.

In fact most people don't realize that two Popes have specifically recognized evolution as fact.

There are three real problems in this area if you ask me:

1) religious fundamentalists
2) athiest fundamentalists (like Dawkins)
3) both sides ignorance of the other
