Why is it illegal to kill racoons?

Living in the country, we have lots of critters, some cute and others not. Some die of lead poisoning. Lead is not allowed in The City.

While I can't recommend a nasty treatment, I have noticed that some animals can't swim well if a full cage is lowered into deep water. Olive barrels have wide mouths.

There are more racoons, skunks, pigeons etc, by far, now then before the white man arrived I would suspect

It is a man made problem as they thrive in the city

We are not talking endangered whales here

I still do not condone animal cruelty no matter the species and as stated believe if there is such a major problem have them re-located to a location away from human habitation. Of course that would mean finding all of them or for the most part most of them and having them moved.

When I lived in the country I would pour a gallon of gas down a groundhogs hole then light it

The concussion would kill them

They would eat my cabbages

I had a contract to sell them to Loblaws and they would use them as a loss leader to get the customers in

They will then fight for territory resulting in cruel death

there is no room in nature for them

KIll them humanly is only solution

Sorry, I still believe in letting nature work itself out in the end to have the real best outcome for ALL. I too believe that man has become more and more and in the end NATURE too will take care of that problem too.

nature cannot work itself out in this case because the coons have no or very little preditors in the city. Food is too plentyfull and shelter easy to find.
Thinning the population is the only way. Coon shit in a kids sand box can screw up a kid for life, its not funny. I say humanely dispatch excess critters for the benefit of all. You won't be allowed to do it openly, too many bleeding hearts, but your only a theif if you get caught.

You are being so politically incorrect. You have really pissed off the raccoon lobby.

What next? Little old ladies with no lives should be prohibited from feeding pigeons (who crap on your car)?

to the ones condoning killing raccoons:

you're all idiots. So if you kill one raccoon, what next? you think more won't come along and then you kill that one. You think you killed all of the raccoons in the entire area? There must be dozens of raccoons in the area you live in. You're going to kill them all? And then what next? You're gonna decide that squirrels are pests, too? How about skunks? Or foxes? You're going to kill those too? Then, what? chipmunks?

Seriously.

You're not the only ones that can live in an area. Yes, you have to co-exist with them. You weren't the first ones to move into the area. They were there before you.

Since when did human beings become so supreme that they're the only ones that can live in an area and decide what others can or can't live in that same area?

Can someone say nazis?

ps. and yes, it was wrong to annihilate the buffalos, too.

I've had lots of problems with racoons on different sites around the city and use animal control companies to deal with them. In the city of toronto there are as many 180+ racooons per square km compared to the country ( 2+ per sq km) The city limits relocation of a trapped racoon to 1km radius but there domain is a 3 km radius so they always come back. You cannot relocate them into a completely new area because they are to territorial. After spending thousands of dollars ( 6 years over 15k on these fu@#$%#), I started having my guys trap them and relocated them to the country where they have I higher rate of survival.

Those crazy LLL's at City Hall are interfering with nature!

Please don't tell Mayor Miller and his LLL pals but I heard rumours that some people are killing rats. Wait until the rat lobby hears of this.

There are some seriously fucked up people on this thread. Talking about torturing animals with peppers, or drowning them. What gives you the right to kill an animal? Because you don't like it? Whack jobs.

As long as the Coons aren't ripping into your house, just leave them the fuck alone. If you keep your waste properly contained, they won't even come round. They won't hurt you. The coons flourish in the city because people are lazy and don't properly contain their waste.

I for one get a kick out of seeing a mother coon with her babies, or a skunk. I've never had one do me any harm, but I've had human trash stick a gun in my face.

Exactly.

Why do so many people think that they have the right to torture and kill animals at any given time. I think that those who advocate torturing animals (Lisa and her peppers, or Yoga and his gasoline, or bigred advocating killing cats) are the sickest fucks going. (Same way as Jeffery Dahlmer started out - torturing animals.) Next they'll be out there blasting baby ducks on a pond thinking that's funny. Oh wait, it's been done.

A racoon tried to attack my cat the other night when he was coming in from the backyard. At first I didn't see anything and then I turned on the light to let him the cat in and I guess the cat didn't see him and the racoon probably felt cornered on the deck. I quickly opened the door and scared him away.

Sure they are pests but they are part of nature imo just like any other animal. Just take preventative measures like making sure garbage or scraps of food aren't lying around and you proabably won't see them as much. I know I made a mistake of leaving a bowl of cat food out when my cat stays out overnight and saw one sitting on the railing of the deck while my cat was hiding in the other corner scared to move.

Most people these days think some animals are bothersome so they think it's okay to get rid of them or kill them. Speaking from personal experience, another problem I have is when people don't consider cats someone's pets. They think it's okay to dispose of them or harm them or threaten to steal them from someone else and put them in the middle of nowhere. This is nature. There may come a day when a lot of animals will be extinct.

Won't this result in a painful death by starvation for a bunch of coons due to lack of food? Or, will those little old ladies with no lives start feeding them table scrape as well?

Racoons mainly eat plants and animals, insects, fruits, seeds, frogs, fish and worms. Garbage is just something else they eat but I'm sure they don't rely on this as their main food supply. Once they realize your property is no longer a food source, they will move away. Trying to harm them by poisoning them among other things is not the answer. Racoons are non-aggressive unless they are threatened and they try very hard not to get in trouble.

Stone walls + slate roof+ steel garage doors = no racoons in my house. They move around the yard (as do rabbits, foxes, squirrels, chipmunks, ducks, etc) but as long as they stay out of my house I am OK with it. My dad had them in his house (wood walls, shingle roof, wood garage door unlocked) but I do not. Making the fortress coon-proof works. Also, my garbage is locked in my steel door garage during the week where they cannot get at it. On garbage night I put out my trash in coon-resistant garbage cans. They could probably get in to the cans, but don't exhert themselves since my neighbours put their trash out in plastic bags...coons go with the path of least resistance, and I give them resistance so they live in another guy's attic on the block and eat other people's garbage.

I feel you. A couple of raccoons kept shitting on my porch so I put two cages out. Caught two of them. I wanted to kill them in the worst way, but decided to drive far away and release them. There is at least one more raccoon that I need to trap.
