Just wondering. Why is "this thing" called a "Hobby"?

You're exchanging $ for some pooning time. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. What makes this a "HOBBY"??

Depends on your intention.

Hobby = “an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.”

Seems quite straight forward.
Working out in a gym or mastering martial arts would qualify as a hobby much more, yet we don't call it that.

There's more complexity to calling anything a "hobby".

There must be a sense of achievement, improvement, creation or mastery. Typically, it also is seen as benefiting mental health, creativity or physical fitness.

Reading through some negative reviews leaves a sense that this "hobby" is an addiction or affliction.

There's also a societal stigma. Good luck convincing the main public that seeing hookers is a hobby.

Imagine a scene in court: "Your worship, I wasn't cheating. I was participating in a hobby, lol".

If you got paid, then it would be an occupation.

What? Do you think they hand out the plastic air planes and glue for free at the hobby shop?

You didn’t read the first line I wrote about intention. Actually, the purpose of a hobby is enjoyment WITHOUT care for an end result. Hence, why intention matters. Jamming with your guitar vs composing music to sell are 2 different intentions of the same activity. One is a hobby, one is work/mastering your craft.

you also realize I literally copied and pasted that right out of the dictionary lol

If you view seeing escorts as a ‘refreshment’ in your life that you control, it’s a hobby. If you can’t control it and it’s controlling you, or consuming you, or you’re too focused on end results without enjoyment, it’s an addiction.

Why would I care about societal stigma or what other people think? This type of thinking is more aligned with addiction. Fear of judgement….if that’s you, take a break. Maybe this isn’t a hobby for you.

Lastly, you’re overthinking this. I took a 5-year break some time ago when I had similar feelings. It wasn’t until I got older and I learned how to interact with this hobby. You have your fun then you let go of your encounter. Letting it go is the most important part. But I do see your point regarding some ppls reviews. They’re so entrenched into each encounter that it’s not even enjoyable. 🤷‍♂️ Enjoy + let go. That’s your hobby. Anything more is an addiction or perversion of time.

IMHO, calling this a "hobby" is like calling a babysitter "an executive director of youth development and temporal supervision" or calling a janitor a "sanitation engineer".

It is called hobby for the same reason SP are called service providers or sex workers and not prostitutes, and escort agencies are called escort agencies and not pimping agencies. It is just a nice word that, most likely, started with many others long time ago and people gravitated toward it. Once large enough mass has gravitated, everyone started to use it. But it can change in the future, the same way as SW was used to mean "street walker" in the past but now it is "sex worker"
