It's been a week and half away from TV as my pink eyes are making slow and painful recovery. So I have been listening to radio a lot. The question that boggles my mind is how come we still have AM radios? Isn't FM signals so much superior than AM signals? My new cellphone comes with FM radio, but no AM. So why do AM radio stations still exists? Why don't they all switch over to FM already?

You can't just convert to FM. You need a spot on the FM dial, and a CRTC licence to operate your new FM station. You would not just give up your AM licence, because they are profitable to operate. A radio license in a major market is worth millions of dollars.

I believe that AM can travel much farther distances.
True. In remote and rural areas, there are fewer local FM stations and the residents can often pick up AM signals from much farther away.

Exactly. People are still listening to AM, the stations are making money, the transmitters and infrastructure are all paid off, why quit?

I only listen to 680. I stopped listening to other AM stations a few years ago because it was all talk shows.

This was an interesting question. Every once in a while someone asks something that you say "Ya, why is that". I can see the distance argument holding water since a lot of AM stations are news only and so the utility of having a far reaching signal would be obvious.

the hobby needs more capitalism
It's free to listen to - no subscription, no monthly bill. I think that says a lot for it.
Agreed.

I think the killer will be whenever Apple or whoever figures out the business model for the iRadio.

For those of us in the older set.....CFRB...or AM640....or Leafs on 590...are much better to listen to.

Often the enlightening hosts and talks shows are so much more helpful to the brain than that jiggy wiggy hip hop shit they call music today!

Advertising dollars. The only way any media outlet can survive.

Heck, why are phone books still around? When the last time you used one of those? They exist for the same reason - advertisers see merit & are willing to fund their existence.
