In the spirit of "best of," who do you think is the most over-rated guitarist that's established fame/fortune far above their actual talent?

I'd have to go with these three:
  • Steve Miller - enjoyable songwriter but pretty pedestrian on the frets.
  • Manny Charlton - of Nazareth fame. Lots of strutting & flash but not much else.
  • Kurt Cobain - he certainly tapped into mid-80s angst. Too bad his playing was rudimentary at best.

Jimmy Page
(I know I'm gonna get slammed for this one.... but seriously... he's a rip-off artist)

Lita Ford
She looks really sleazy - thats why she's popular in the metal world.. and because of her stint as a Runaway. But seriously.. every time someone says "Lita Ford", I reply "Nancy Wilson."

For a woman, Nancy Wilson plays one mean acoustic!

As much as I like Rush, I have to say Alex Lifeson is over rated. I always thought his playing did not equal Peart and Lee......

The thing about Alex is he is innovative / interesting. In that way I think he fits well with Peart & Lee. Sometimes he'll do something and you're like, "WTF IS that??"

I agree.

He's very good. But he's not THEE Greatest ever as so many make him out to be. To me, a lot of what he does sounds very similar.

George Harrison.
an excellent pick.

But I have to give it to The Edge. He's all gear. Every song is tick/delay processor up the wazoo.

What do you say about those that believe the Edge has created a new "style" of playing or sound? Not a huge fan but I read some articles in the past and I guess they kinda convinced me.....

More of a question (rhetorical) here. How come Neil Young is brilliant on the acoustic guitar, but add distortion and he is totally crappy? I have wondered that for years.

Over-reated...
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Tony Iommi
Ritchie Blackmore

all are brilliant song writers however.
