I'm not sure if the Leafs will finish at the bottom of the league but they will be close.

LA will probably be in that vicinity along with Atlanta and the NY Islanders.

There is lots of time before the season begins, and there might be alot of trade activity left before training camp.

I would say that the Panthers, Blues, Kings and Leafs all have a shot at it. My odds on favorite (unless they make some unexpected trades) is our very own Toronto Maple Leafs...

I was going to say Phoenix as well but now they have Jokinen and that should help them out.
He didn't help Florida that much.

The Leafs, Canucks and Senators are easily amongst the 10 worst teams in the leauge.

Leafs the wrost, the Canucks are in the bottom five, and the Sens aren't that from that.

If you only look at line 2-4, the D, and the goaltending, I would argue that the Sens are the worst team in the NHL. The top line can only rise them so far.

As for Phoenix... they are better then all three of those teams.... they were better then seven teams last year and had a very young team that should continue to grow. They are playoff contenders... might miss them... but they will not be a bottom five team, IMO.

don't quote me... or do it.... whatever... too early to tell, but many teams now do have their training camp rosters in order so i'll take a stab at ranking what i think the overall standings will be for next april:

Eastern Conference Standings
Atlantic
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
NY Rangers
New Jersey
NY Islanders

Northeast
Montreal
Ottawa
Boston
Buffalo
Toronto

Southeast
Tampa Bay
Washington
Carolina
Florida
Atlanta

Western Conference Standings
Central

Detroit
Nashville
Chicago
Columbus
St. Louis

Northwest
Calgary
Colorado
Edmonton
Minnesota
Vancouver

Pacific
Dallas
San Jose
Phoenix
Anaheim
Los Angeles

Atlanta is my pick for the 30th spot.

President's trophy choice is open IMO...

all of Dallas, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Jose have made upgrades... though 2 of the 4 probably will experience 'hangovers'... my pick for Prez trophy is Dallas.

also, something tells me that if Montreal was going to sign Mats Sundin, it would have already happened. Since, Calgary still desperately needs a #1 center, that is where Sundin would make the 'perfect' fit... hey, it's still in Canada, there's cap space, and he'd get that #1 winger he's been waiting his entire career for...

Hopefully the Leafs, gives them the best shot at Taverres
Tavares is no longer ranked number 1, that now belongs to the big Swedish defencemen Hedman.

Still a year to go... things could change again.. I hope that Tavares is no longer #1 by the end of the year, that way the Leafs will have a better shot at him. If Schenn turns out as good as expected, and the teams infront of them draft Hedman, then getting Tavares looks even better...

On paper the Leafs should be considered the favourite, but it is possible, though not probable, that they may surprise us all and finish 9th again:mad:

Chances are slim, but Sundin may decide to accept the Leafs' one year offer and finish his career as a Leaf, as he has always maintained that's what he wants; or he wants to screw the Leafs' chances of finishing last because he was so pissed by the Leafs' asking him to waive his notrade last year and the embarrassment they are putting his best buddy McCabe through.

I would have to say its a toss up between TML & Florida.

TML - too many holes to fill.

FLA - no firepower & questionable goaltending

The biggest fall from last season to this upcoming season HAS to be Pittsburgh, they lost many core players I dont think they will be able to bounce back where they were last season.

The way it looks so far, Atlanta will probably finish last, however there is along way to go before the Season Starts.

At this point in time I generally agree with what you have stated.

My only concern would be the Detroit division - Do the Wings suffer a hangover and those teams take advantage of it?

Chicago is a team on the rise, and I kind of look at them like they are the Cubs of the NHL.

Sentiment aside, I really hope the Leafs tank it this year. They do not have the horses to go for it now, so no need to get greedy on the market - Select a few key future prospects and build for 2010 on.

Sundeen? Don'twaste our time - Let the fans honour him when he makes his next visit. Personally, I think if he gave a shit about the organization he would have waived his no-trade last year and at least brought in some talent/prospects for the organization. He chose not to, which speaks a lot about his character (even if someone states they do not like to join a team late in the season to win a cup, that is bullshit. Prior to no trade clauses, it was a fact of hockey life, and most welcomed by any dedicated professional)
