Sushi is very tasty. The sushi place in Bayview Village mall is nice for a quick bite (next door to Oliver & B). Also, for a more relaxed atmosphere, Edo at Eglington & Avenue Rd is also good. I had sushi for dinner tonight (take out from the Bayview Village place).

Sashimi!

Best place I have been is 'U' at the Westin Hotel, :p Mont Tremblant.

Great delivery service from Sapporo in downtown Hamilton. (I wont go back to the restaurant- too busy, loud, forget decor)

Downtown

I think two excellent choices have been left off the list;

OMI - on Church St at Alexander. Small place above street level where John (formerly of Hiro) does brilliant Omakase that includes individually seasoned Nigiri and some grilled items. The place is so small that he's usually fully booked in advance, but you can usually sneak in to the Sushi bar on a week night.

TaKe - On Front near Yonge. Yes, it's touristy and huge. Yes, it's seriously overpriced. But the fish quality is excellent (melt-in-your-mouth), and the preparation solid if a bit traditional. Try the AmberJack.

I think a lot of people avoid or don't like sushi because there is so much "fast-food" sushi in Toronto - and it's really horrible stuff. There must be a dozen sushi joints on Queen St and not one of them is even vaguely edible. In some other cities, the balance is weighted more heavily toward fine dining, and you can have stellar experiences (I'm thinking Mirai in Chicago or 1/2 dozen places just off Broadway in NYC).

I don't know about you guys, but a great sushi dinner makes me feel energized and horny, and makes me want to invade something, er...someone...um, I think it explains a lot of mid-20th century history.

I remember reading about diet benefit for sushi for those who want to lose few extra pounds, sushi was some of the top models preffered meals during their shoot, it's filling yet very light. Too bad not too many Sushi places serves brown rice sushi.

Question....who would like sushi if you couldn't dip it in the soy/wasabi bowl?

Let's face it, your eating bland, sticky white rice, with gummy, tasteless raw fish on top of it.

It's the condiment that makes the meal.

Now if your talking about tempura shrimp, or terayki salmon...I'm in for that.
Though interestingly enough, the wasabi that most of us eat and call wasabi actually is NOT wasabi - it's imitation wasabi.

Read em and weep....

Almost all sushi bars in America and Japan serve imitation (seiyō) wasabi (see Etymology section, below) because authentic wasabi is extremely expensive. Few people, even in Japan, realize that the wasabi that they consume is in fact an imitation. Although very hard to find, real wasabi powder (from Wasabia japonica plant) is a convenient way to experience true wasabi's remarkable flavor, but most commercially available "wasabi" powders contain no true wasabi at all. Most utilize a powdered imitation made from horseradish, mustard seed, and green food coloring (sometimes Spirulina). Whether real or imitation the powder is mixed with an equal amount of water to make a paste.

To distinguish between the true variety of wasabi and the imitation product, real wasabi is known in Japan as hon-wasabi (本山葵), meaning original or true wasabi. Local Sushi chefs usually substitute horseradish in Japanese restaurants.

As far as Sushi goes.

Kaji is by far and away the best in town.

Honourable Mention:

Blowfish
Hiro on King East
the Sushi place on Queen, just east of Woodbine (surprisingly)
The Japanese Steakhouse on Eglinton west of Renforth..

Never been to or heard of Sushi Marche in Leslieville, but it's on my to-do list based on the above.

Anybody ever wonder what happens to the wasabi ball that you leave on the plate and don't consume?

Sometimes I wonder if it isn't just re-used....yuck....

I love sushi. Tonight we went to Masamune on Dixie South of 401. We like it there, it is very quiet, we always get an enclosed booth, and the service is very good. The food is very good too, though I have never been to Kaji, I will one day.

There is a place in Vancouver that I have been to a couple of times, where the sushi is on little boats that circulate in a channel that goes around the large sushi bar. You grab the plate you want, and pay by the plate. Kids love it, and it is fun. Is there a place like that in the GTA?

I've never had the pleasure of meeting you JessiMae, but I've read all your posts, and love your mysterious pics, and someday I hope to have the pleasure of eating sushi with you...:p

(...a muffin'd be good, too.)
