Satan took on many forms, as Pinhead he was awesome. The sequels turned him into a cheesedick like Tom Cruise.

No contest. Its Darth Vader. Especially with the end of Rogue One showing him in true badassery.

But really that music, the breathing, the voice, the cold mechanical presence coupled with religious zealotry, the sheer power, and callous disregard for life.

Think back to when you first saw him. He is the reason the Star Wars universe was truly successful.

Honorable mentions:

Blofeld and Goldfinger from the Bond films
Michael Myers(really set off the Slasher genre), Bates as the OG.
Thanos
Dracula in various eras( Chistopher Lee for me)
Ouuuu I agree with this! I am a star wars fan!

I nominate Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Louise Fletcher’s performance was fantastic, she held her own against Jack Nicholson at his best.

Its this simple. In both the origional trilogy and the prequel trilogy the character never scared me. He was bad sure but in an objective way.

Darth Vader is scarier, starting with physical presence but then add this in. He was indeed supposed to be "the chosen one", the best of them(of us ). And due to a combination of tragedy, fear, hate, and manipulation became the child killer and terrifying villain. Because while Palpatine was a sociopath and therefore irredeemable Vader was the Good Man turned bad.

We fear that more because but for chance it could be one of us. He is a mirror we don't want to look at. The best villain is the one with a reason that actually isn't selfish. Vader turned to the Dark for arguably the right reasons. And we as people fear that far more. That our own decisions could take us fown the same path.

The reveal he was Luke's father remains to this day one is one of the great moments of film. There are compilations on Youtube of parents showing it to their kids and the kids losing it. Because its also a moment for kids when they realize parents can be flawed. The looks and denials are amazing.

Thats why Palpatine runs less. He just didn't hit home the way Vader does.

I agree, fantastic performance of licenced societal sociopathy.
