Linehan by a mile for entertainer interviews - he was so well prepared many interviewees would exclaim "how did you know that?"
Preparation is key and he was the king at it.

Jon Stewart, from time to time. Unfortunately, most of his interviews are really lame. He spends far too much energy on trying to be funny. I cringe when he brings on an actor and the whole interview is just a shameless plug and Stewart's incessant giggling. On the other hand, when he wants to do a serious interview, he can be brilliant.Charlie Rose. Jon Stewart (most of the time). Mansbridge.
I have to agree with this. Paikin is the best.Surprised no one has mentioned Steve Paikin.
George S is great too.george strombolopolous
Plus,he was also one of the very few who constantly had a lineup of stars wanting to be interviewed by him.He didn't have to do any chasing, which was quite common in his day, especially with the elite personalities.Linehan by a mile for entertainer interviews - he was so well prepared many interviewees would exclaim "how did you know that?"

Dating myself, but I might agree. Was it Dick Cavett who interviewed Janis Joplin? There's an interview on one of her albums where she talks about going to her highschool reunion.Dating myself, but it's gotta be Dick Cavett. Sample with John and Yoko below:
