Anyone want to Chime in on opinions of good Car Rental company. Enterprise might be good one, they pick you up if need be.

ps: side note. i was looking to fly to Moncton from the GTA area...Bastard Air Canada wants to fuck us in this merry season. $700 on way to.. thats the cost for a round trip ticket to London UK!?. went with Westjet ($139) after totally being pissed off by the greed of Air "Bastard" Canada.

I took the train out to Moncton this summer and used Hertz once I got there.

It's a small city so there's not as much selection. Hertz was the only one that the type of vehicle I was looking for.

Hertz and Avis are usually the most expensive.

AFAIK, Hertz is the only one where you get rental car points for a free rental.

Alamo and Thrifty are usually the cheapest.

Enterprise is usually good for local rentals, because they can pick you up at your home or the repair shop.

You should join the frequent renter programs. For Hertz and Thrifty, you do get special treatment if you're a member. The other rental car companies don't really treat you very special if you're a member or not.

What kind of perks can you get?

You left off a number of the main car rental companies :
Budget, Alamo, Thrifty, Discount and Dollar.

Then, theres are some smaller ones such as Routes and Payless.

It's nothing major.

Just little stuff, like the car is ready for you when you arrive.

They already have all your information, so it's somewhat faster.

In some cases, you can bypass a long line of tourists and go straight to the counter to get your keys.

But it's free to join, so you won't lose anything.

My vote's for Enterprise.
Cars are current, and they offer domestics and imports (Nissans, Toyota's etc).
Rates are often better than the bigger companies and the service is great - every single location! I must have rented from a dozen different locations and often am surprised at the consistency of the level of service.
Geesh...almost sounds like a shill:D

Anyone use Zip Car or Auto Share? They rent by the hour. You join and pick up the cars from various locations around the city and then return them to the same place. I am curious about any experiences with them.

Personally, I don't like the logos that they have painted on their cars.

You may sound like a shill, but I second your opinion. I've been very pleased with Enterprise and if I need a rental it's the first place I call now. My experiences have been consistent with yours.

I was thinking of joining zipcars but it really depends on what you're planning on doing. If you only need the car for 2 hours and have to make multiple stops, then it's totally worth it.

But if you need it for more than a day, then Enterprise is the way to go. I recently rented a car for 2 days for $50 total (zip would have charged $100)....and the car was delivered to me too!

One thing about Enterprise:

I've noticed that they have the most amount of hot chicks working there, and they sometimes wear sexy power suits.

I once saw a really hot blonde working at Hertz in Vegas.

Enterprise is my favourite now. I used to use Avis, but now use Enterprise. I like Avis for expense account use as they rented Cadillacs and that is my fav rental car. When paying out of my own pocket I use Enterprise. I never asked them to 'pick me up' (though it is a good feature) - I just like their rates, attitude and the new cars they have. I requested a mid-size and they rented me an Infiniti G35 for less than the rental cost of a Chevy Impala at Avis.

I am a Hertz #1 Club Gold member, and it is worth it. Instead of waiting in line to fill out a page of forms, the car is ready to go. In Las Vegas, you get off the bus first at the #1 club board, look at your stall number, and go to that car. The guard checks your drivers license on the way out, and that is it, no waiting.

I have used Enterprise several times in Chicago with wonderful rates, and apparently friendly customer service.
But the friendliness disappears when I decline their insurance. The pushy agent one time demanded to see the gold credit card I was using -- this was later out at the car, not at the desk where you fill out forms -- and threatening me in all sorts of veiled ways if I didn't take Enterprise insurance.

It was so bad I almost filed a complaint on the guy, but I figured he is pressured to upsell by his managers, so I didn't bother. But I won't go back to the O'Hare Enterprise because of it.

Of course, all the companies try to sell you their insurance
(i.e., the Collision Damage Waiver, or CDW), but often the comapnies with the lowest rates are the pushiest. I have experienced this also at Thrifty and Alamo.

But Enterprise is the sneakiest: they won't let you sign the forms and complete the contract until you meet a second agent at the car, who tries to chat you up and break you down. It's an unpleasant tactic, and I have seen it practiced by them repeatedly.

My guess is that car rental agents are paid poorly, but get nice commissions on the insurance they sell, and commissions on pushing you into a larger vehicle. Has anybody on TERB ever worked for a car rental outfit, or known anyone who has, to give us the inside dope on this?

And has anyone on TERB ever has an accident while driving a rental car? How was it all handled by the company, and were you pleased? That is really the litmus test, I guess, after the rates. Fortunately it has not happened to me.

Back at the end of October Discount accused me of damaging their vehicle. They refused to provide me with pictures, proof of repair, etc. This vehicle when I picked it up had numerous problems with it originally as per the walk around sheet. And this issue is still outstanding as I am waiting for a call from the district manager, for over a month. Everytime they call me they ask when I will be making payment, I say I'm waiting for the district manager to call me. They say Oh, she hasn't called you yet. Still waiting
