OK, we are men, we have disposable income. We like the finer things. Can we all agree that fine whisky is water of life?

The Glenfiddich 12 Year old is my go to.

Spoiled myself a little with the other 2. I was hoping to get the 16 yr old Lagavulin, but that was the last bottle in the Falls when I bought around new years.

I will say the Lagavulin 8 yr old is very “peaty”. I did not like the first 2 glasses… and by the end of the bottle I was a big fan. It’s not for everybody though.

I’ll start with something that is great, rare (at least in Ontario) and won’t break the bank. I’m a fan of Japanese whisky and this is a good start. Technically under new Japanese laws it doesnt qualify as true Japanese whisky anymore since there’s scotch in it but damn it’s good.

I have the 14 and the ipa experimental and actually like the IPA more. My contact at Glenfiddich tells me it’s discontinued so I’ll likely pick up a couple of more to stock up.

I still have not tried the 15 yr old or the 18 yr old. I think my oldest kid has a few bottles of the 15. He wants us to share a bottle of the 18 yr at our next celebration. (Checks LCBO now…). Looks like 15 &18 750 ml are $105 and $185 respectively.

I'm more of a fan of Talisker than Lagavulin.
But these days I'm a fan of Bearface, first Canadian whisky I'm happy to sip.

I just picked up the Bearface Umami ltd edition. Quite good.

Yet to explore the drams from the Isle of Skye, Islay is sacred ground for me.

They say whiskey in moderation is better for you than wine. Garry is into the dram, unlike moi, he doesn't have a rustic palate.

When I drank Scotch, I preferred Islay single malts like Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdaich. Or Johnny Walker Green (an Islay blend). Don't mind Glenmorangie either. The Black Bottle was a good blend too.

What other Canadian brands do you like…. Wisers would be my go to. But I never went down that road far enough to discover really great Canadian Brands.

My buddy swears by Crown…. But I honestly don’t think it’s great. Both Crown and 40 Creek are both just whiskeys with a lot of sugar… fake smoothness (in my opinion at least)

Crown Northern Harvest won whisky of the year about 5 years ago and is the only one I would buy. Lot 40 Dark is amazing Cdn juice. Alberta Premium Cask Strength is very good if you can find it. Wiser 18 yr is also good but their 15 is good bang for the buck.

Japanese whisky is my hands down favourite but hard to find in LCBO. Nikka Miyagikyo, Yoichi and Taketsuru can be sometimes found and all very good. Suntory Toki is only good in a Highball. Hibiki should be available again soon. Yamazaki, Chita and Hakushu you’ll have to go south to find,

Poker, thanks for asking. For Canadian, Wisers Deluxe is also excellent by my palate. I'll by it a couple time per year to change things up. For my palate, Crown is too sweet. My buddy also loves it and brings it over all the time, in fact, I'm sure I'll be swilling it late this afternoon watching Masters. They are all reasonably priced, so no risk trying.

Other mentions, Crown Northern Harvest, I tried it, liked it, for sure, but get fatigued with the dominant spice flavours. Different, but like a high peat Scotch, one glass is enough before moving on.
Glenmorangie : for sure very nice. I find the wood character a little overbearing, but if you plow through about 3 of them your palate adjusts and it smoothes out. The bottle is beautiful. For $71 is is very good. Another great option at that price point, and the one I would prefer is Glenlivet 12 y.o. for $70
