Plan to buy a new laptop. Not an apple.
Toshiba and Sony seem to be the best----consumer reviews.
I have a 4yr old HP now and it is freezing all the time.
Budget 1.5-2k

Suggestions would be appreciated..no gaming..just a dam good machine.
Mind you I would like slots for SD chips.

I think Dells are great, I've got an old Dell Lattitude CPX that's still ticking, fast and reliable even up against my newer Inspiron 9300. I've only had to contact tech support once, but they were very helpfull and professional. In the end it's a subjective thing the styling, look and feel vary from one model to another and the opinions of users differ as well, much the like this hobby :)

I've stayed with Dell for desktops for close to eight years... and trusted a Terbite's recommendation to only buy Toshiba for laptops. So far both options have worked out perfectly.

I work for a company where we tested a large number of labtops.. IBM, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, MDG etc... both hardware and software.. the best is still IBM but it cost more money.. we even tested dropping them.. Dell is one of the worst one's.. the hard disk melted..!

I have been through several laptops; 1 Toshiba (broke it), 3 compaqs (broke all 3), 1 Dell (still running), 2 IBM (1 got stolen, the other is still running).

here is my vedict:

Toshiba - Generally ugly and heavy, for sexy and light you are paying too much money with this brand.

Compaqs- Offers alot of variety but nothing in particular stands out.

Dell- Excellent Specs, bad build quality, Dell has a history of poor customer service and issues with power (battery, adapters, power ICs). The battery on the Dell D600 died a few months after purchase and so did my sisters battery on her Dell. My AC adapter stopped working a few months ago and I had to buy a new one). The ventilation design on my D600 is retarded as it overheats unless I prop a book underneath it.

IBM- Used to be expensive, but now they are very affordable. The best build quality of any laptop brand. Light, fast, reliable and has alot of nice touches. IBM is like buying BMW, it has nifty stuff and they pay alot of attention to detail. Price wise I think they are maybe 200 bucks more than competing brands with the same specs on paper. I saw an IBM t43 from the IBM.ca website for 1350, which is an awsome deal. Thier business class (T Series) which is their mainstream model would qualify as "thin and light" with other brands. Also IBM's battery life is in general superior to all other brands.

I imagine that if I took all my laptops that I ever owned when they were new and dropped them from about 5ft the only laptop to come out still working would be my current IBM T40.

I still have my Dell D600, I use it for games and surfing since it has a decent video card and the screen is very bright. For travel and serious work I use my IBM T40.

Toshiba for show IBM for Go

I have used most brands of laptops over the years (Toshiba, Compaq, HP, Dell, and IBM) and I would say that is mobility is important than an IBM (I currently use a T41) would be your best choice, for power (i.e. desktop replacement) and high end graphics I would recommend Toshiba (my company uses a Tashiba for software demonstration purposes).

IMHO:eek:

yeah i bought an acer from them last month ... they have a retail outlet over by finch station .. good deal.. $1,150 inc. tax with a $50 rebate and i financed it over 3 months. it came with a 1.3 gig processor celeron processor, bundled with ms works, norton anti virus... they conned me into buying mcafee anti virus too for $30 (norton doesnt do the trick, they said which is a lie), so they more or less got the rebate back ..

so far no problems .. blue tooth wireless unit installed so you can hook up wherever there's wireless no problem .. fast...not crazy about the keyboard or display .. mine is a travel edition (whatever that means) and my dad bought a similar non travel version of the acer laptop (identical, except with a better keyboard and screen) for about $150 less ...

but acer has really good 1 800 support... i've used it a couple of times with very good results ..

I heard Walmart has a $300 laptop
But I think you need to be prepared to punch out the other shoppers to get it...

I bought one for one of my kids. The drive crapped out 20 days past the warranty and they just said "sorry". It cost about $200 to replace it. Other than that it has been great. Well, except for the keyboard, which frequently doesn't connect with some letters. Oh, and the headphone jack is falling out and really staticy. But otherwise it's great!
