it's pretty obvious that "regular" women don't get regular STD checkups to maintain their health, as most responsible and professional SPs do

Speaking for myself...and I am a newbie at this (since late June 2006 hobbying)....the services of an SP are cheaper on a return on investment basis hands down.
I wouldn't say that an affair is safer. There is a great temptation to go "bare-back" and who knows where either of you have been.I actually think sp's are safer because you at least think about it and most of them ( certainly not all) perform only with the rubber suit on.
Also, an affair usually leads to room rentals, dinners trips , presents and other pressures to pay.

An SP is going to be more discreet.. If you have an affair do it with someone who has "more to loose" than you do ..

when you say "cheaper" which meaning are you using?

If it is JUST sex...then an SP is certainly more efficent. You show up, you get what you want, you pay, you leave.
Cheaper depends on the people...most of the guys here seem to spend most of their time apparently dealing with women who are primarily interested in their money, but that hasn't been my personal experience. You KNOW what an escort will cost, but in my mind if you are having an "affair" with someone who cares for / about you as you do them, money is not a factor beyond the cost of "entertainment" (with dinner and a movie certainly costing less than $200 - $300 when you aren't trying to impress your dining companion...)
Now, on the other hand, if you are looking for something besides sex...companionship...a relationship on whatever level, an escort would get DAMN expensive. And I think that is the mistake many guys make...they get "involved" with someone who charges them by the hour, and what do you know...soon they have a "hobby habit" that costs thousands of dollars per month. A sugar daddy relationship might be on par with that...but do you think a regular every day joe who works at the Ford plant and has a chickee on the side pays thousands of dollars to keep her around?? It isn't always about the money guys...sometimes women like you because they like YOU ( I know that will be hard to sell to THIS audience, but it is true).
Insofar as safe - I know this group has convinced itself that escorts are safer because they have ONLY protected sex with EVERYONE...and they don't have sex with people who might be at risk...like for example...guys who see escorts...LOL. It isn't like we don't have any esocrts who are (or haven't been ) pregnant. And escorts never catch STDs either...yup - nothing but protected sex going on in the sex industry. Me, I'd take my chances with a civilian I took time to get to know and could make a judgement call about (and then have proected sex with until we both got tested) versus an escort who I KNOW had sex with a half dozen other guys that week (all of whom as likely as not had sex with multiple partners that week as well).
In summary, it is a personal call...based on what it is you are looking for....

Guys, you're asking the wrong question...marriage is the most expensive...sp's the most inexpensive...affairs in the middle, unless the wife finds out..then it's the most expensive! SP's don't call your wife..girlfriends frequently do...if you're single stay that way...if I divide half my net worth by by how many times I've fucked my wife I'd be better off paying SP's $2000 an hour!

If you have an affair only do it with a married woman and only if her main reason for doing it is sex and intimacy.
If she is an emotional wreck, abused, separated, single, rocky marriage....... stay away.
