Diana's new place on Woodbine Ave at John is amazing. Everything taste so good there. I have been dining there quite often since they open 2 months or so ago cuz it is just across from my golf place and costing me quite a bit. Me and my fav go there regularly for oysters and clam chowder. The worst thing is having 2 great restaurants opening in the past 2-3 months within walking distance from my golf place. The Japanese restaurant Zen near by is ridiculously expansive. One order of sashimi for one person is 75 bucks. Sushi is 65 bucks and yet you have a hard time getting a seat if you don't book ahead.

Going to have to disagree with you on this one although we do have similar MP tastes.... I have been a couple times and will not return. The food was meh at best and the lobster roll is more like a tuna sandwich ...zero chunks and stale bread. The oysters are ok but have been served bad oysters that I had to complain about... Would not recommend at all.

Try one of the Asian markets. Sunny Food Mart has four locations around Toronto. Large assortment of live, fresh, and frozen fish. One of my friends buys there frequently, and enjoys the prices vs other places, that have been tried.
Not sure about Red snapper, but then I never looked for it. :p They will also cut the fish to your specs, if needed.

Super Store had a week long sale at $6.88 a pound for lobsters, I bought 4 and came to $30 and change...They even offered to steam them.

I also look for them at Oceans as the have Lobster on sale at times

Never buy lobsters already steamed, or ones that have been steamed and cooled, wrapped in the refrigerator. The fish markets have a shmuck going around to check the lobster tanks once an hour and pick out the ones that are not very lively or already dead. Then they throw them in the steamer.

It may be fishy, but it won't be seafood if that's where it came from. But you have pointed out the Big Issue. We're nowhere near the sea; for truly fresh try a fishing port on the Atlantic. Otherwise, unless you saw them pull it out of the tank, you're buying something long dead and fresh-frozen at best.

Doesn't it make you wonder why it's so hard to find freshwater fish when we sit on the shore of the world's largest lake system?

There are lots of reasonably priced seafood stores in the GTA. They all source the fish from just a few wholesalers. Generally there is a correlation between how fresh the fish is and what the price is and the stores know this a tweak prices depending on the neigbourhood. Since the GTA is not on the ocean, then ocean fish sold here has been previously frozen, and then semi thawed before being sent to market. To get ultra fresh sashemi grade fish, then places like Taro Fish and Diana's have it at an ultra high price and these two places even sell to some restaurants. High end, not"all you can eat" sushi restaurants have buyers, often sushi or sashemi chefs who wake up very early in the morning to buy fish at wholesale import places. Lobster prices have experienced deflation in North America so that the price of lobster now in the store, not the restaurant, is about the same as it was in 1978 due to supply and demand, but any other fish has seen the price go up exponentially. Fortunately with the diverse amount of ethnic groups in the GTA, there is a huge market for seafood available from around the world here.

I am not sure if prices however Diana's Seafood is on Lawrence by Warden. They have live seafood of just about anything you want (live fish lots of types, live lobsters, crab, oysters etc).

There is also a place called Beaver Fishery on Milner between McCowan and Markham Rd.
Intersting name. lol

Diana's is a little pricey but excellent quality.

T&T has a good selection of fresh fish. The fish they use for sushi is good but their rice sucks.

Loblaws has fish on sale from time to time but quality seems to vary from store to store. Always ask when the fish was delivered. The MLG location always has a good selection of oysters (up to 8 varieties) and you can mix and match any number of each.

Never bought fish at the St. Lawrence Market but other's have mentioned it.

It's not really. This place has fresh and frozen Pike, Yellow Perch, Pickerel, Lake Trout and more all from Ontario. http://www.seafooddepot.ca/index.html

There's also lots of small fish shops that carry fresh local fish outside of Toronto along the shores of Lake Erie and Huron. Just takes a little Googling to find them.

Kensington market fishmongers have seen better days. The diaspora has changed and there is too much competition now. T&T , Warden and Steeles is excellent for good priced lobster and live fish but no where near the selection of Diana's for fresh frozen fish.

Diana's gets my vote too.
Diana's is world class...the family has a long history in that business as whole sellers and you will not find better. Just maybe...maybe as good on a given day but never better.
