Even if it is a fantasy, it is a fantasy that I'd love to see.

OK I'll give it a four, but I'm not going to place any money on it.
I don't if the boy is right but it is certainly interesting

I wondered if anyone else had heard any thing similar

There have been a few rumours of the PM wanting to prresent a balanced budget, hand out a few goodies and resign on top. It would also allow time for a new leader to set his mark with another budget.
While he holds things pretty close to the chest the timing would be right for a smooth transition.

After branding everything "the Harper government" for years, I can't see anyone but Harper taking on Trudeau. The rest of the party haven't got the brand recognition, Harper solidified his personal power by elevating his own name branding above even the party.

Ol' Stevie has to get out from under this Senate scandal or it will be Prime Minister Trudeau soon.

Well- the story I Have been told is it is an ego thing- he won't chance losing an election and not going out on top. Apparently the recent byelections as well as private polling is spooking him

I don't think Harper will resign. He wants to create a conservative country slowly, and not have a conservative revolution burn up quickly like the common sense revolution. In order to create that conservative country slowly, he has to remain in power for a long time.

I agree but may not be his choice. He is headed for 3rd place behind Liberals and NDP. A "Sir we need to talk" moment is getting closer.

Epic thread bump.

But yes, the branding of the government as the "Harper Govt" and the death grip he had on the party bit them in the ass. At another time or in another party Harper would have resigned around the time of your post and let some new ideas and new faces lead.

That would have muted the very powerful "time for a change" message.

But that was impossible as Harper had made himself absolute ruler within the party and branded the government with his name rather than the party name. The only way to go was down the toilet.
