Research followed 113 people on controlled diets to garner results contradicting conventional wisdom

When it comes to reducing your blood cholesterol with healthy eating, white meat isn't any better than red meat, according to a new study that contradicts previous medical thinking.
High levels of blood cholesterol are a leading cause of heart disease, and a condition faced by about 40 per cent of Canadian adults, according to Statistics Canada.

Diet and lifestyle changes are crucial to controlling high blood cholesterol, and some health experts said the study by doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, underscores the need for Canadians to eat less meat.
"We used to think that white meat was better than red meat for controlling blood cholesterol. What we found was there really was no difference," said Dr. Ronald Krauss, the study's senior author and a scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute in California.
The key takeaway, Krauss said, is that consumers who want to lower their blood cholesterol should substitute plant-based proteins for both red and white meat.

"I wouldn't go overboard and say: 'You should never have red meat or you should never have white meat,'" Krauss said in an interview. "We are saying you shouldn't emphasize those proteins too heavily — keep them at a moderate level."
The study, published on June 4 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed 113 people on six different diets prescribed by researchers to track the impact of various types of proteins on blood cholesterol levels.
Typically, research on eating habits involves questionnaires or surveys rather than determining exactly what people in the study group eat, Krauss said. This study controlled participants' diets and tested their blood cholesterol under various eating regimes determined by researchers.

The study is the largest of its kind to focus on dietary proteins, Krauss said.
It took a number of years to carry out, he said — and the results were unexpected.
Don't make big conclusions: nutritionist
Carol Dombrow, a nutrition consultant for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, said the study looks "well done" but its sample size was small.

She said it's "premature" to make any big conclusions on red versus white meat when it comes to controlling blood cholesterol.
"This is an interesting study but we need way more information to make a conclusion about it," Dombrow said in an interview. "The study does agree with pushing plant-based foods," she said, a move backed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

So, between this and all the stuff CM posts, what I’m getting is that no one actually has a fucking clue what’s healthy or not when it comes to nutrition, and you can find studies that back up pretty much any diet you might choose to follow. Meat is healthy, then it’s not. Lard is healthy, then it’s not, use butter. Then butter is bad, use margarine. Then margarine is poison and full of hydrogenated oils, which may or may not be bad, so use butter or lard instead. Coconut oil is a superfood that cures everything from indigestion to cancer, except it’s poison and will kill you. Vegetables are healthy, except they’re full of anti nutrients that give you cancer and heart disease. Bread is bad, unless you’re from Europe or the Mediterranean, where it’s a dietary staple and people are healthier and slimmer than North Americans on average. Chocolate is bad, but it’s full of antioxidants and nutrients and is good for your heart. Alcohol is bad, but moderate regular drinkers are healthier on average.

So fuck it. Eat what you want. It’s all just rolling the dice anyway.

actually man made crap like hydrogenated oils and refines sugars in products like bread are bad for you. natural nutrients like cholesterol, fats, etc are healthy for you.

alcohol studies that shown benefits are flawed and they are linked to the alcohol industry. in those studies they pit richer healthier people who drink vs those who are unhealthy and have chronic illnesses who don't drink.

It's difficult trying to disentangle confounding variables in these studies which is why the findings are so often inconclusive or contradictory. Ideally, you would want to know genetic predispositions of the subjects, keep them on the exact same diet (in quantity and consumed at the same time), with people of the same weight, height, and fat distribution, with the exact same daily routine, and so on.

On top of that you have weed thru corrupt interests (government and industry entities) to figure out which studies might be complete agenda driven rubbish.

I think that when all else fails, we need to look to nature for guidance. We're mammals and evolved like other mammals (and our archaic hominid ancestors) for hundreds of thousands of years to eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and meat. We had limited access to sweets/cane/honey but would quickly consume those rarities when we could. The diet described is basically how fitness people eat. They eat like rabbits and get regular exercise.

We didn't evolve to eat juicy burgers and french fries drenched in oils every day, sugary lattes/juices/pop, daily desserts, anymore than we did to drink beer or smoke cigarettes. These are all relatively toxic to the body. They developed as a result of our highly successful civilizations which have afforded us excess and access to all that tastes good, but were rarely encountered throughout our evolutionary history.

The lesson is simple. If you want to be more healthy, eat a lot more like a rabbit. It really works. Literally cut out all fries, breads, desserts (cake, pie), artificial sweets like chocolates and candies, drinks (water only!), and you're 70% of the way to good health. The other 30% requires exercise (cardio with some muscle resistance training).

Replace sweets with fruits
Replace burgers & fries with salads & eggs
Replace sugary drinks with water
Replace watching trash tv on your dirty couch, with a daily walk or treadmill
Reduce or quit drinking beer and smoking
Continue having sex and masturbating to clear out the pipes and reduce prostate cancer

Sorry but the talk was about fat/cholesterol and coronary artery disease, not diabetes and obesity. Thin people also have heart disease.

How about substituting meat 3-5 times a week with vegetables? I have relatives I help out with cooking etc, and grilled/roasted vegetables are an excellent substitute.
High cholesterol is no joke. And very prominent today.

These ever changing statistics concerning the meat industry, are most likely biased.
Plant based diet, or vegetable substitutes might help.

Cannot imagine completely cutting out meat.
