Whats with all the Scottish characters?

I’m not Scottish but I've noticed lately that many commercials have angry Scots in them, from gum to loans.

Has Mike Myers made this that popular? I remember I was laughing my as of in "I married an Axe murder" And I love Grounds Keeper Willy, but do any of the Scottish on board take offence to theses characters.

Whew, I thought Lee was going to claim to be Scottish and I was going to request a change of national heritage.

Sheik being gay, that's nothing new. He's always had the breasts for it.

As Sheik and a few others know.... 1st Generation Canadian.... but think me and my sister were only ones in the house without a scottish accent.

"I dunnae know where I got it Angus, but it took first prize"... Everyone with a scot in their family knows that joke.

Never the safest place
It doesn't seem to be politically incorrect to make fun of Scottish people. The Bugs Bunny cartoon where he plays golf against the Scotsman (who chases after a bullet saying "it's been in the family for years") airs all the time, while the Speedy Gonzalez ones are rarely shown.

About being Scottish...

I find that the recent rash of Scottish-based jokes to be an absolute riot. What makes it really funny to me is that I do in fact have a relative who looks like that old guy on payday loans or whatever the name is.

I think that the stereotyping is brilliant - we are easy targets, and given that we are either too hammered to care, or are too busy arguing with someone, these fly right over our heads...

I am a second-generation Canadian - but participate in the traditional Highland Games in Canada.

So...what do I think about people making fun of Scots?

Couldn't give a rat's ass! Knock yerselves out!

And for those fellow Scots on the board...give 'em the wee three fingas ya bass...

I'll throw my 2 pence in.....

First, yes I am Scottish. Came to canada when I was 8 (22 years ago). Am I offended? No. Are they funny? No. The sterotype of being loud, obnoxious, drunk and cheap are not what I prefer to be thought of as. But nonetheless if we can't laugh at ourselves....

Where I do have a problem is how it is acceptable to enjoy and laugh at some sterotypes and not others.

I believe they're called SPORNS? or SPORINS? or something like that.

I have nothing against the Scottish. But that doesnt stop me from enjoying the portrayals. I'm still miffed that I dont get to see some traditional Jewish stereotypes on TV anymore - It's like watching caricature portrayals of some of my old departed relatives. Damned PC lobbyists!

I wonder though... if one of them married my daughter, who is jewish, would their children be Chai-landers?
