Don't single out just the Portuguese. I've seen nutty celebrations in Little Italy, Greektown and Koreatown when their teams have won in various World/Euro Cups. I think it is pretty fun and harmless overall other than that one dude who was insulted for having a Canadian flag (now that would piss me off too).
I always hope to see Portugal eliminated as soon as possible. I have only one self-serving reason for this: I'm forced to drive through this neighbourhood to get to work, as well as to HOL2 & Fairbanks. Toronto's Portugese are already the slowest and most infuriating drivers on the street. Anything that brings them out in large numbers is bad news for me.
I am astonished at how many North Americans still live in such a cultural vacum that they are not aware of the World Cup and take this as something political.
I am also astonished that people can whine about the price of gasoline all year, yet think nothing of driving around in circles from 5PM to Midnight holding a flag out their sunroof. I wish gasoline had gone up to $2/litre, so that people only drove for essential things, like work and hobbying.
