Real world as in the fear-mongering one? You are right that the chances of spreading germs is increased by kissing, but the risk factor is low, especially if both of you exercise basic hygiene practices. If you and sweetcookie don't want to take the risk, it's your perogative. The byproduct is that you appear to be more distant. As sweetcookie says, she makes up for it in other ways.

But the answer to the OP's questions still stands: kissing is desirable because it adds more intimacy to the encounter.
