My car has developed a heavy tank rumble noise coming out of the exhaust and so I think I need a new muffler because the exhaust pipes look pretty good to me.

Out of Canadian Tire, Speedy and Midas is any one of these better than the others or are they all the same.
Thanks.

I no longer do that much repairs to my cars anymore, just maintenance. Cars are pretty good these days and do not break down much. I trade them before any big stuff comes up. Here is how I would approach the problem. If it is a hole in the tail pipe it is easy to repair with a pipe repair kit from CDN Tire and a couple of hose clamps. ( do not use the wire they give you in the kit to secure the pipe bandage, it does not work well ) If it is a hole in the muffler side, you can make a small patch with the muffler repair kit and use two large hose clamps to go around the muffler. If there is a hole in the front or back end of the muffler, you need to patch it and then use a small piece of sheet metal secured with sheet metal screws, this would be a temporary fix as this patch will rust very quickly. if there is a rusty hole where the pipe meets the muffler, this is almost impossible to fix. These are temporary fixes, if you do not want to be rumbling around the streets with a noisy car.

If you are planning to keep the car for a long time, get an original muffler, this can be installed at the dealer or CDN Tire or muffler shop can get you one and install it for you. They last much longer and are made to your car specs. The generic muffler they give you at muffler shops will never sound right.

If you take your car to canadian tire and let high school kids work on it then you deserve whatever comes your way.

At kipling, north of queensway and south of dundas is a place called hot rod scotts. Its a bit on the pricey side but they do custom mufflers and exhausts. They also replace stock stuff, its all they do every day, all day long. You go there it will be done right. They have all the right tools and the ABILITY to do it right. You go to other shit shops and your exhaust will fall off next week

Since you are not in a hurry, take it to three shops and ask for a written estimate.
I recently had an issue with my front pipe from manifold to Catalytic convertor. Called Speedy and was quoted $600...almost choked. Went into a Meineke location, was in and out in 65 minutes, cost $210......I recommend you call around.

Ditto on stay away from Can Tire.

Shop it out , and dont listen Ceiling Cat regarding tape , patches , soup can , or over whatever else he metioned , shows how little he really knows with stupid replys like that , why fix it with patches , screw clamps , when within time you need a emmisson test anyway , if your exhaust is not sealed from front to back they will not even test it find a no name shop , there a good one in Oshawa if your near , The big name shops quoted me 300.00 to 600. 00 for a pipe , all I needed was the clamp fixed , , 100.00 cash and out the door .

Did you read the part where I said it was a temporary fix? I also recommend that an original muffler is your best bet. A quick fix is good for someone that wants to shop around, not attract cops and get a ticket for a noisy muffler or trade his car ( without having to buy a new muffler and pipes ). When I was under 25 I fixed my own car, some of my mufflers and pipes had 10 patches on them.

Muffler's are cheap but watch out you don't get screwed into replacing the pipe leading to the muffler..................then since that pipe can't be properly dismantled from the catalytic converter you replace the catalytic converter..................and then the pipes leading up to the manifold. It never ends if you have an unscrupulous operator and I've seen them at big names like Midas, Can. Tire. It's the other parts that the make their money.

Zoro mufflers in Mississauga near Dundas you won't likely get a better deal. http://www.zoromuffler.com/
I second that. I had both of my cars done at zoros, the entire system. Mind you I keep my cars for over 20 years. They can replace the whole system with stainless (I'm talking from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe inclusive). I went for that option. Because of that for as long as I owe these cars, I don't anticipate any exhaust problems. Love it.

I ended up getting mine fixed at a place called JPG Exhaust around Ford Drive and QEW near South Service Road.
On redflagdeals.ca they have a reputation for being freaks because they only repair what needs to be repaired instead of going on some chicken shit run and replacing perfectly good parts.

The guy told me the basic pipes and muffler were in very good condition mainly because they're made from low grade stainless steel.

On my car the the problem was couplers or 'spherical joints' that join or bridge pipes together. In fact I had 2 bad connections, - one in front of the catalytic converter and the other joint behind the cat. The couplers just basicaly broke apart.
Charged me $190. plus tax to install two new spherical joints and I was on my way. I'm happy with the service I got.

At redflagdeals.ca, Zoro Muffler and JPG Exhaust seem to have the highest ratings from consumers in discussion forums.
Zoro was my second choice. They have a lot of satisfied customers.
