Have a look at this footage of a storm that occured across the Med in the Belaric Islands around the same time as in Sicily. This was during the day, Sicilicy got hit at night.

At the 7 minute mark you can see a waterspout in the distance.

Retracted is up.

Here is a retractible keel deployed in the down position for sailing. In the sunk ship, the lead bulb at the end is being reported as being 200 tons of lead! I may be wrong but find that hard to believe. Maybe 20 tonnes of lead. Either way, imagine the leverage and center fo gravity with that much lead at the end of a 10-15' long fin?

You seem quite interested in the subject so here is a good article from Boat International magazine that discussed keell selection on a 65m sailing yacht. Slightloy longer than the one that got blown.

Interesting concept. Almost impossible to capsize the boat with the keel weighing 200 tons . Also, the wider the retractable keels fin the more resistance it would have to movement as it bites into the water and the longer the keel the more leverage for greater center of gravity

Got me thinking, you could just heave anchors overboard on all sides to achieve same effect . At some point capsizing would simply not be possible

Would have been an idea to stabalize sailing ships throughout history to weather a storm as a retractable keel was not in their technology although some genius would have contemplated it, no doubt .

I wonder if it was ever done?

Other boats near them had no problem. They just had bad luck when the spout hit them like a tornado... was a nice yacht though.

What are the odds to have both dude involved in a fraud case both killed within a few days?

The problem with the boat case is that innocent lives were taken along with main suspect. And it was done in Italy. Big mistake.

In life you do not fuck up with Italians if family is involved.

The mast was apparently a contributing factor for the sinking. Question is why have such a long mast for a design when most super yachts are just big fancy ships?
