What is your preferred work schedule? 9 to 5, or other?

I would choose 7-3 if I could. My internal clock has me up early even on days off so being done mid after would be perfect.

Heh. I am currently working with a team that has scheduling for their department. They asked about my departments timesheets as they noticed every employee had different hours. I said, yes, I let my team pick their hours, they all have a minimim they must reach but how they pace those hours out and when they do them, is up to them. They were shocked, and followed up with, "What is the turnover like on your team?" to which, "There is none. People don't leave my team." from what I gather from their response is that their turnover is a lot higher...

Fuck convention. People are more productive when they feel they are treated humanistically and when they can work around their lifestyles and internal clocks. You just need some clear boundaries and accountability.

I liked working 10:00 AM - 6 PM when I was an office drone. I always got a seat on the subway in the morning, and I got a lot of work done, or returned many calls, between 4:30 and 6 PM, when the reception desk was closed for incoming calls.

There were people in my office who 'worked' 7 AM to 3 PM, and most of them ate breakfast and chatted in the break room before 8:30 AM.

Being single, I don't mind later shifts.

But if I had a family, 8 to 4 would be great.

Between terms in University I had a job that had 24 hour shifts in three week rotating 8 hour shifts:

Afternoon ( 4pm - 12 Midnight) Worst for me - never saw family or friends. If I joined a party after work, it would be in time to be a designated driver.

Nights (Midnight - 8 AM) Okay - tough driving home in morning rush hour and sleeping in the day. At least you could go out to dinner /bar with friends although you had to leave early.

Days (8 AM - 4 PM) Land of the living - my favorite

I like 10 to 6 because I tend to miss rush hour both ways.

3 to 11 is also good because you can have a lazy morning or meet friend for lunch do banking etc without lineups.

Worked in Banff for 3 years after University to ski. Got a job in the Banff Springs in security where I worked either 11pm to 7 am or 9 pm to 5 am. It was perfect. Skied Mon to Fri (didn't ski weekends because of the weekend crowds and there was a three area, Sunshine, Norquay and Lake Louise weekday pass that was very reasonable.) Looking back it was 3 years of great memories of skiing, drinking and screwing...lol.

Presently in the summer the whole office works 'summer hours' Start 8am, take and hour lunch, finish 5:30 M-W, til 5 on Thurs. Then if your priority work is done Friday is a whole 8am to noon. s
Rest of the year it is 8:30 to 5.

Thanks! When I initiated it, I had my doubts, like would people be better off with imposed routine/structure, do they have the self discipline required to be consistent without a schedule? And interestingly enough, they all did have a moment of not trusting themselves and feared the idea of not having a set routine, that went away really fast when they realized the benefits of being able to nap if needed, take a longer lunch, or go to coffee with a friend during the day, and none mind working a little extra later in the day to make up the time.

Great idea!!

My current gig I start at 1 AM and work 10-12 hours, 4 days a week. 3 1/2 day weekend every week, starting around noon on Friday.

Bonus: I have an 8-minute walk for a commute.

But I'd still rather be back delivering concrete and work my way up the seniority list to where I don't have to work winters.
