Sam Walston died
and a coporation runs the company now.

Empolyees seem to be a bit less thrilled to work for minimum wage, then they were when he was alive.

I get the point about where you shop.
My neighborhood has a Dominion across the street from a No Frills.
Going from one to another is like night and day!!
Dominion will cost you a few cents more, but the store is clean, well lit, well stocked, and you can have as many shopping bags as you like
No Frills will save you a few cents on the stock they found in a warehouse (not a consistant selection, always different junk) the store is nasty filthy! broken jars lay on the floor forever, very dimly lit (so you don't see the damage to the cans your buying), and they charge you a nickel for a bag to carry the goods you have just bought from their store!!!

The clientelle is also like night and day.
Loblaws shoppers will pay a few bucks more for the pretty store, and tend to be well dressed, not in tuxes, but not in the ripped track pants found on some No Frills shoppers)
No Frills shoppers will run you over with their cart (which they must rent for .25) to beat you to the chicken sale!!
It is not a very nice environment.

Mind you these are just my observations.

And bar+leby88 what can I say, we were bored!!!

I guess it is true that you do get what you pay for!

Canadian customer relations are the WORST!. I've been through the States, Bahamas, Jamaica, New Zealand and Australia and never been treated as poorly as in Canada. Smarten up dumbasses! And you wonder why I get pissed going through Tim Horton's drive-thru when you screw-up my order.

Thanks red. I have to give kudos to a young dude working at Home Depot today. I was looking for some material to make a reflector for my photography light and he gave me some contacts to check out who might be able to assist. Seems he is a studio/theatre lighting/drama guy. I love Home Depot.

Just so you know, the stuff on the shelves of No Frills comes from exactly the same warehouse as the stuff you'll find at Loblaws. EXACTLY the same place. Trust me, I used to work there...

The CEO

of Nordstrom’s (awesome department store based in Seattle) was asked, "your service reputation is so good, who trains your staff?" his answer was "their parents".

I just love that, hiring the right people is 90% of it.

Well Sam Walton, the father of Wal-Mart is deceased. The current people who run WalMart only care about profits.

In the United States WalMart has been beset by a few scandals involving the hiring of illegal (undocumented workers) via subcontracting out the cleaning crews.

I suspect WalMart only cares about making more money above all else. A friend of mine used to work at Sam's Club and I must say McDonalds tends to treat their employees just a little bit better. That's not saying much.

I personally don't shop at WalMart anymore unless I'm desperate and nothing else is open nearby.

Walmart has turned into nothing more than a warehouse. Anybody can put up shelves and sell stuff cheap. I used to work at Home Depot part-time, and I can tell you that it is customer service that wins out in the end. Talk to somebody, laugh and interact, and they come back every day and will even spend more money than going somewhere else.
90% of the people that I dealt with came into HD for advice and tips. It was not unusual to have repeat customers actually seek you out to help them again.
It's the same old song and dance - people want to talk/deal/interact with other people. If the cashier at Walmart is a zombie that doen't even say 'HI' - I am not going to go back - even to save money

I have shopped in both stores and know the differences that you are talking about. I don't think it is quite true about broken bottles lying about forever.

One issue that people seem to be skirting when they mention the type of people that shop at the different stores is race.

I really think that there is an implication that because no frills , food basics etc are frequented more by new immigrants those less well off they are of a lower standard. It seem people are afraid to say what they really think.

As do most for-profit organizations. I think you are minimizing the process reengineering that Walmart has forced on the retail industry. They have been a very innovative company and the market has rewarded them.

WalMart will only be rewarded if they can show positive momentum every quarter.

WalMart brought retail just in time inventory and buying in huge volume filling warehouses with inventory.

However now just about all large retailers are copying the WalMart model so what next?

WalMart is allegedly resorting to using illegal labor to clean their stores all in the name of reducing costs. This would imply WalMart is running out of legit methods to lower their costs.

Even WalMart has had to lower guidance in the past year. WalMart is still making money and growing but not nearly at the rate they were back in the 1990s.

What does the Clinton administration have to do with WalMart? The Clinton administration has been out of power for nearly 4 years. Blaming Clinton for anything is just a cheap cop out now.
