Read in the newspaper today that the No 1 album in Canada today was Celine Dion ( just released ), No 2 was Clay Aikin ( unbelieveable ) and No 10 was Barbara Striesand .

What the hell is going on .....is this what happens to a nation that has had too many donuts ? Is it a result of allowing same-sex marriages ? Are we sure the drinking water is still safe ?

It's not just Canadian taste in music. Aiken was #1 in the U.S. I mean, sure all three have vocal talents, maybe even technical superiority, but where is the personality and spice?

What has allowed some artists to have 30 year long careers at the top of the charts and ticket sales? Personality. Who could compare to bands like the Stones now? I'm not talking musically either. Lots of bands have talent. But what gives an artist longevity is the ability to be different in terms of persona. I don't see that rock and roll mystique in any of the new acts. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Any suggestions for the next classic rock band?

It is indeed unfortunate that there really is very little great music coming out. It is not just a Canadian issue, the U.S. is right there as well.

I still listen to the music that came out in the 60s and 70s. Music that was fun, music that had passion, music that you could sing along with... music that has longevity. I can't think of one artist now that really will be listened to 10, 20 or 30 years from now.

Today's music is too canned... too pop.... I just don't get it.

I realize that each older generation says that about the music of the younger generation. I'm willing to admit that there is the possibility that I am falling into that category, but I very much want to see something in today's music to prove me wrong. Will Coldplay, Eminem, Creed, etc be still working as anything other than a nostalgia act in 10 years? God help us, I hope that Brittany won't.

We're getting older guys. The kids (under 20) love the stuff that's out. We said we'd never be like our parents, but I think there's not much fighting it. I still like a lot of what's popular out there, but it gets less and less every day. There will be another Rolling Stones - we just won't like them.

If kids are buying Celine and Clay...... I'm a semi-old fart and I think these acts are for my parents .

This would be like me buying a Lawrence Welk album in 1974 .

yeah, I don't know who's buying Celine...Clay Aiken, on the other hand - well, every stupid little girl in North America is hooked on American Idol. Hey man, I'll just stick to my old Van Halen records.

Once again, nobody will admit to buying albums of Canada's all-time best-selling singer. Surprisingly though, at Celine's concerts, no one seems to be wearing a bag over his head.

Celine is one of the most prolific as well as most successful Canadian singers. And despite the francophone market being smaller and less lucrative, she makes a point of turning out a French-language album for almost every English languange album. A handful of her English language songs are translations or adaptations of the original French language works.

Much of her entourage is from Quebec. She and René have also used their status in the industry to promote certain other promising French-Canadian artists.

However, no man can admit to enjoying Céline's music as she violates two elementary rules. (1) It's not cool to like top-20 music - only unsophisticatic boors like top-20 stuff. (2) It's not cool to like a female singer unless she is hot.

As a corollary to (2), any female singer idolized by teenage and pre-teen girls is deemed not to be hot - her actual physical appearance and sexiness notwithstanding (sorry Britney).

Only if you buy your music after watching Entertainment Tonight .

The biggest complaint with Celine's music is that , to me , for the last 10 years it has been this homogenized ( Oprah-ized ? ) , overproduced drival that follows a formula deviously dreamt up by that odious husband of hers . Somehow she went from 20 years old to 60 in about 5 years .

Even Celine is preferable to Britany , who is another formula singer who relies on the hormones of her fans . Strangely , something obviously geared to 12 year olds doesn't offend me . I guess because I don't get the feeling that some music industry exec targeted me when they released her on the world .

Clay should be singing at revival meetings or be the lead in Cat's .Either way he would be out of earshot .

the real music listeners ie. the youth, are downloading all their music. The people buying the Celine, etc. are either too rich or too stupid to avail of this opportunity. ( Dont tell me they are too honest. how did they get so rich?)

Well then we need to organize a resurrection ceremony. I'm not ready to give up on it yet.

Celine is a technically superior vocalist. I just don't enjoy any of her material. And Brittany is indeed a lovely young hottie, and she seems to stage a wonderful show. I just don't have much respect for her vocal abilities. She seems to hit about 4 notes in total. But hey, I've seen Kiss 5 times and they sure aren't virtuosos either. They put on a hell of a show and that's all I can say for them. To me it's all in the personality, heart and soul of a performer and that is lacking across the board - jazz, blues, even hip hop. It's all pre-fab and homogenized.

They cant figure out how to download and have horrible taste in music.

There's plenty of good music out there right now. Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, AFI, Blink 182. Rock is always going to be evolving. Zepplin didn't sound like elvis, Van Halen didn't sound like Zepplin. I know the 80s were a great decade for rock, but when the bitterness over the end of glam rock finally dies, people will realize that the 90s weren't too shabby. Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Bush were all from the 90s. People are always so bleak when they talk about music, it's depressing. I don't know, maybe my youth is showing.

I thought that Blink 182 had split up?

Anyway, I do agree BBKing with your statements about Kiss. Gene and Paul are both highly educated and intelligent men who have dedicated their lives to growing their business and writing music to please their fans. But that isn't what people go to see them for is it? It's the show and the personalities that come out on stage. Gene Simmons on stage and Gene Simmons off stage are completely different people. Go to Genesimmons.com and read some of his philosophical and theology ramblings. Fascinating stuff.
