What is really happening in Greta Thunberg's home country?

This teen is way more articulate and stable than Thunberg.
She deserves to be listened to.

I agree that Sweden is an absolute mess. Any country that can come up with someone as convoluted and illogical as the Nordic Model has a big problem.

I’ll also say I’m not a fan of Greta. I don’t think she’s an effective advocate for climate change issues. She comes off as very churlish and seems like she’d be unpleasant to be around, and frankly, adults just don’t like to feel like they’re being lectured by a kid. She doesn’t seem to offer a lot of solutions beyond just yelling at people and telling world leaders they’re not doing enough. She has passion and does seem to inspire the young people, which is good, but the whole thing just seems contrived. She shows up, she’s received by world leaders like some sort of foreign dignitary, she yells and cries, we get sound bites and pictures of her making angry faces, and then she leaves and not much actually happens. I’d like to see her take a more rational, measured approach and offer real steps people could take rather than just being emotional. I just don’t feel like her approach is likely to accomplish much because she alienates as many people (if not more) than she inspires.

She does have the capability to inspire young people to cut
classes and protest. I have yet to see any evidence of her
inspiring people to cut down CO2 emission in a meaningful.
way. A 12 old Sudbury girl who travelled all the way
to New York to join her rally does not sound like the
serious type about making a commitment to a low
carbon lifestyle when she is grown up.

That’s basically what I’m trying to say. She’s good at getting young people riled up, but so far it seems all that those people have managed to accomplish is annoying commuters and giving the climate change deniers more ammunition to use.

Getting most of the world to protest for change is a pretty amazing feat for a kid.
Awareness is a worthy goal, the more people on the streets the harder for politicians to ignore it.

Well, yes and no. As was pointed out above, there are people flying to other countries to attend protests, which sort of defeats the purpose. Plus, as Trump being elected showed us, if you annoy people enough (in Trump’s case, I think identity politics was a big catalyst), they often tend to do the opposite of what you want just to spite you. Attitudes matter. Elections are often won or lost based on who the voters think they’d more like to go out for a beer with. The trouble here is that the major obstacle for change is the republicans, who are masters of spin. If you make a nuisance of yourself and annoy people, it’s very easy for them to portray these kids as thugs who just harass anyone who disagrees with them. That’s why I think it’s so important to be very, very careful about who represents us and what those people are saying and doing.

I just think Greta does more harm than good.

Given how much more discussion there has been on this board already, its been pretty successful.
For the board to keep so many threads about a 16 year old kids actions against climate change is pretty amazing.
Just look at how triggered the climate change deniers are here and in the politics forum.
And now the deniers are really looking like the extremists.

You people ACTUALLY believe she sailed over on a boat from Sweden and then flew to Calgary on her own ? Never, ever, go full retard.

I just think we’re well past the point where awareness is the problem. Everyone is already aware of the issue, many just don’t believe in it. We don’t need someone who can spread awareness, we need someone who can convince the deniers that they’re wrong, and that will not be an easy feat. Also, when those type of people get “triggered”, in my experience, they tend to dig in their heels and double down, which really only makes things worse.

We don’t need a passionate, emotional appeal. We need someone who can unequivocally explain the science in a way that people can understand and in a way they won’t be able to dismiss, while still being likeable and relatable. Unfortunately, I’m not sure such a person exists.

Case in point.
What she didn’t sail over to the east coast and then walked or biked from Sweden?

All I have heard from her is yelling and screaming about how adults are destroying the environment; I have yet to hear any sound solution.

Did I not say almost exactly that a few posts up?

That's exactly the point.
Most people believe the scientists, but there is massive disinformation out there as well.
90 companies have created about 2/3's of all CO2 in the atmosphere, those massively well funded companies have also spent on what's been very effective disinformation at convincing deniers (see larue).

The same way it took scientists decades before people stopped supporting smoking tobacco, its taken until the mass of supporters makes smokers just that much more uncomfortable with their habits.
We know the science is right, we just need the deniers and polluters to know that the population believes it and wants to do something about it.

I'm surprised you haven't called for her to just die and stop emitting CO2 totally.

I love how Grtea triggers all the neo-cons and carbon belchers on the board. The carbon belching industry has worked and spent like crazy to spread falsehoods in order to have us believe that the disinterested and do gooders Jason Kenny and Trump really speak the truth. Then this kid comes along and says to them "you are all full of shit and totally irresponsible." And she is right. The carbon economy is dying. Alberta is fucked. Sorry, but Albertans had 30 or 40 years to build up a rain day fund (like Norway) to facilitate a transition but instead chose to let the industry retain huge chunks of the oil and gas revenue. Now what?

You should want her to help cut CO2 emissions generated
by the neo-cons as well as by the libtards on the board. It won't
solve any problem if you and I continue burning gas like there
is no tomorrow after listening to her speech.
