What is consider successful in life?
Get a dream job after graduate? Have a balance long like a telephone number in your bank account? Start a family? Or changing the world?

I am feeling kinda lost lately. Graduated few years ago, jobless and almost homeless for about half a year. Finally got the dream job most new grad would die to have, have a decent salary, and got a few promotions in short few years. Families and friends think that I am doing great and succeaaful. But personally I am feeling lost, i want to be succesaful but I am not sure if having a great job or making billions of dollar is it. And at the same time, I don't think I can be like Nikola Tesla (just a random example) who created electricity and change the world.

What do you think is consider successful?

A homeless person can be considered successful. They have successfully escaped the rat race and are free from numerous obligations.

A crooked doctor who makes millions can be considered successful. They have the trophy wife, Bentley, and mansion.

A scientist who finally finds a cure for cancer after many years of hard work can be considered successful.

There is no single definition. Everyone is different.

But perhaps being truly happy is a good definition.

I think when you stop thinking about this question and not worrying about it. You're at ease with yourself and you are successful.

I feel lost too but I've realized that most unhappiness is self inflicted and it is in us to find contentment in simple things. And within ourselves. For the moments that I'm able to blank out everything else and live what I just wrote, I feel really happy.

I'm a lover not a philosopher. The age old meaning of life question. We can give you lots of idea, but you got to go through the rigmarole to figure it out on your own. Clearly, the big salary and promotions aren't doing it for you. I honestly can't see how working for someone else could ever make anyone happy, but that's just me.

I assume you're still single so go do some travelling and make some new friends, volunteer for a cause, learn something you really want to learn and not something that you need for a job.

Some people would consider finding their true passion (something that you would love to do and would eagerly get out of bed every morning just so you can get at it), being able to happily pursue their passion as a job (and get paid well for it - a bonus) to be one definition of success. This definition assumes that you will be happy and content as you look back on your life.

Unfortunately, very few of us are lucky enough or wise enough to understand what is their true passion at a young age to be able to consciously choose the right path. And even when one is conscious of it, it can still be a very difficult choice to make, because there are always other life constraints - eg: you need to have enough $ to meet your basic needs, and you have to make sacrifices.

Nikola Tesla probably felt like a failure many times and he suffered from severe depression.
In his later life he was seen as a mad scientist, he died impoverished yet he contributed so much to the world.

Some feat more successful than that has been accomplished.
Running oneself to the death to raise big bucks to fund the search for
a cure is more rewarding than doing the hard work in a laboratory.

The problem is, society tells us a lot about what we should do, and it is very unfulfilling. I have decided to try an retire at under 50. A lot of people look at me funny when I tell them I am retired and say "you're too young to retire" . Well I found every 6 figure job I had to be awful, and new shiny objects only make you happy for about 5 minutes. So I decided I would settle for less money and travel around for a few years and see whats what. I will have to live on about 50-60K but that is not a big deal, I won't be constantly travelling, but I just need to move out of context. And of course I plan to bang lots of hot foreign women until I find that boring. But avoiding winter is the plan for now.

Be the person your dog thinks you are.

For me it's happy, successful, nice kids who will be great adults - the rest of it is just blowing in the wind.
