And a republic is when a well armed sheep contests the vote.*d* said:A democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep vote on what's for lunch.
what if there was no countries?papasmerf
What if all men could embrace their brother?
And what if no religion (cult) were to preach hate and preach only love?
Peace comes from prosparity and never from servitude. So if all were free peace might follow that freedom.

As a matter of policy, the State should not turn democracy into a fetish. In particular, it can be disastrous to prematurely relax social controls in places where there exist irrational popular movements led by charismatic Hercules figures. Look at what happened to Weimar Germany. Additionally, the State should adopt a policy of pre-emptive execution of demagogues before they're in any position to heroically lead their people off a cliff and plunge the world into war.

It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Pres. Bush is about as far away from a demagogue as could be. He has absolutely no charisma, never rants, and doesn't even seem to like speaking in public (and isn't very good at it). He doesn't swagger and boast about what a heroic tough guy he is; he doesn't make women faint and men swear to follow him unto death. He is the very image of a sober, serious administrator and Statesman, the type of leader that's appointed by a mature, self-confident electorate that isn't looking for a Superman to swoop down and rescue it from Evil.irlandais9000 said:Very amusing, in light of your support of a demagogue, and your earlier post stating that people need to be lied to about the reasons for war.
That's actually one of the things I like about the song.irlandais9000 said:Very amusing, in light of your support of a demagogue, and your earlier post stating that people need to be lied to about the reasons for war.
That's funny. You have a good sense of humour.Truncador said:He is the very image of a sober, serious administrator and Statesman, the type of leader that's appointed by a mature, self-confident electorate that isn't looking for a Superman to swoop down and rescue it from Evil.

On the contrary, Bush does indeed have charisma - in the "aww shucks" kind of way, pretending that he is a regular guy. As far as sober and serious, I don't know about that, reckless and arrogant would be my choice of words.Truncador said:Pres. Bush is about as far away from a demagogue as could be. I agree that it's a calculated image- but the image is very different from that of, say, Castro, Hitler, or Mussolini. The whole idea of charisma- at least, the type specifically associated with Fascism and demagogy in general- is about trying to come across as something that the regular guy can't be, as having that special spark of something that makes one superior to the average person. "Aww, shucks" is not the type of posture associated with that particular kind of leader.irlandais9000 said:On the contrary, Bush does indeed have charisma - in the "aww shucks" kind of way, pretending that he is a regular guy.
Whatever you may think of his actions, in his public presentation and image he does try to come across as sober and serious. As far as sober and serious, I don't know about that, reckless and arrogant would be my choice of words.
Spot on!bbking said:While my politics are just left on center, during the last election I had to ask myself, "If I had a dinner party, who would I rather have at that party - Kerry or Bush" ...and unfortunately I would have to say Bush. While his down home West Texas charm is well polished he certainly wouldn't bore me to tears like Kerry would.
As for reckless and arrogant - well on the arrogant side so was Kerry and for that matter any polititian at that level. Reckless - nah not a chance, reckless polititians go up in flames long before the WH - I think we on the left see him as reckless only because we don't agree with him.
