Margaret Houlihan's father said to Col. Potter, "Retirement is like a holiday to rest up, but soon there is nothing to rest up for". When I was still in school I use to see old retired geezers in the park that would come along and sit on a bench then after a while walk off and go home. This was the pre-internet days when you did not have much of a choice after retirement. What is there to do after retirement?

Its about hobbies, travel, friends etc. When I go I have lots of plans for several years while I'm still healthy. Not everything costs money either.

Some people have to work. Feel useful. I get that. But you can be those things with hobbies.

Do?
Not sure. Know I won’t be sitting still. My neighbor is now in his 60s. Fills his days, filling his cups. I garden so will expand the vegetable gardens. Maybe work PT somewhere. Know one guy that did green keeping at a golf course. That and a basically free membership paid for his golf.

winter months. If not somewhere warm. Same idea. I won’t be glued to the TV.

People that know how to trade on the market do not have to retire, I have been trading since I was in high school. I have that to keep me occupied and productive. Financial ability has a lot to do with the choices you have after retirement.

the plans is or was to build my own dream house somewhere, live in another warm country during winter. learn to speak the language, train and recon the country to see its suitability for full time life.

maybe start a family, maybe not.

Probably will try to stay fit (gym, walking, pickleball etc.), 2-3 trips abroad each year, a couple of road tips each year, looking after my finances, looking after animals. Plans certainly doesn't include freezing my ass off here and shoveling snow.

I retired last year at 50yo after slow and steady investment in the markets starting in my 20s. I could have retired maybe a couple of years earlier but it was important for me to build a large enough nest egg so I don't freak out when the markets wobble and I had enough discretionary spend to do a variety of things.

Some of my freed up time I allocate to physical activity which was way harder to fit in around the work day. I go for walks (while listening to podcasts), swims, skates, jump on the treadmill, community centre gym etc.
Another thing I've focused on is social activities. Staying out late at a pub after playing ball on a weekday isn't a problem anymore. My friends and I bought a game pack for the Canucks so we can hang out more often.
The only thing that hasn't fully panned out is travel. While I've gone on a few trips, I haven't traveled as much as I was hoping. The problem is that I hate traveling alone and pretty much all of my friends and family are still working.

Here
I actually tried it this year spent 2 months down in South America sitting on a beach drinking beer and traveling the Amazon and so forth. When I came back here I got so bored I went back to work. I find that if I don't have something mentally and physically demanding my brain turns to mush

You’re not alone Mr Deeds.
as mentioned studies especially across the pond from EU countries are finding that those that work a little longer live longer and are happier. studies vary, and likely due to different demographics etc. However

For me anyways, it’s about doing something you enjoy vs something for a paycheck.

Go to Mars.....fewer people there.....
.................but you have to start drinking piss five days after you leave earth. You can't come back and you will die there with a belly full of piss or of dehydration when you run out of piss.

That is so true. I was never a gamer but trading for me is like gaming, but there is a prize that comes with it if you win. I get a dopamine high when I achieve on the market.

At a SP near me
My neighbour is retired. Tells me he’s bored to death. He runs, gardens, cleaned all his windows, removed all the sand between his interlock pavers and resanded them. Washes out his garage floor a couple of times a month. Poor guy is running out of things to do. He’s tried taking part time jobs, car jockey at a dealership. Customer service at an airline.

Poor bastard. I should introduce him to TERB and pooning. Lol
