Dust is generally dead skin cells from Humans and animals.

It can be highly allergenic, I am allergic to it.

Dang right it can be allergenic. I am allegic to dust mites and mold. The last time I had an allegy test done to see if I could have a shot to help cure my allegies I had to have oxygen administered and the paramedics showed up at the doctors office.

A little hint to the guys that wear too much cologne or highly scented soaps. Don't. I am not allergic to fragrances but on some days dependant on how bad my allergies are fragrances can just add to breathing problems.

Old worn carpet isn't as bad as new. New fibres (mostly man made) vent off all kinds of nasty smells. Like that "new car smell" that everyone drools over. That's all the chemicals in the plastics etc lol.

There are hypoallergenic filters you can buy for your furnace that is supposed to help control allergens plus there are all kinds of air purifiers out there that do individual rooms.

I read somewhere that the average human sheds off a couple of pounds of dead skin every year and is a major source of dust.

Worst offender in a home is probably the bedroom pillows. Even if the material inside the pillows is hypo-allergenic, they still collect gunk & dust from your body as you sleep.

A pillow collects up to 2 pounds of dust mite feces [the stuff you are allergic to] over a 2-year period. Therefore, your pillow is the most obvious place to start with dust mite encasings if you do not want to bury your nose into dust mites every night.

When the carpet wore down, where do you think the teensy tiny fibre particles went? Dust. Old, traditional wool carpets at least are no more toxic/allergenic as they break down than your sweater, but as for chemically-based, factory made broadloom…? And then there's the underlay, which was made even cheaper than the carpet, and which no one thinks about very much at all, except how to buy it cheaper.

If you're suspicious, peel back a corner, including the underlay, and see the byproducts of decomposition. Not a pretty site after a few years.

And that's if you're a fanatic about frequent vacuuming.
