Just to make small talk I like to ask...
Not being nosey but perhaps the conversation can evolve into something fun and more enjoyable for parties.
Most businessmen keep it low key with vague answers
Which tells me he is like upper ma agent or owner which also tells he is serious and dry.

Cops tell me they're cops I enjoy poking fun at them and they like it

Politicians are vague but you so you shift the topic to keep discretion on his part.
Doctors don't give a shit, they will tell you because they are proud of themselves and should be. Therefore I never talk shop because I know they get it all the time with others.
Diplomats will tell you they are diplomats.to which I respond that isn't a real job is it? Lol I enjoy making jokes and most guys are easy going laid back with this thing.
Contstruction workers are sometimes quiet about their profession because I think they are embarrassed but I don't know for sure why they feel the need to keep that secret.
Financial planners and lawyers tell me what they do and I tend not to make fun because I know they already hate their chosen profession.i leave that one alone lol.

Self employed people say entrepreneurs.
Drug dealers say they are self employed or entrepreneurs. ..
To which I reply ok so your a drug dealer so I should charge you more then hehe.
I ask this question basically to break the ice with some humor to follow about whatever job he has..this actually relaxes the client believe it or not.
Thanks for sharing. This was really interesting to read.

Geological survey company. I get to travel a little bit, but mostly I do logistics for the young bucks willing to go to second world crap holes in the field. It's a moderate job I can do in my sleep so there is low stress. I admit it sounds cooler when I type it out and it's always a great opener at parties, lots of time I'm bored in my office checking Facebook.
