The final legion of the Roman Empire were the last defenders of Constantinople under the emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos. There were 5.000 Greeks along with 2.000 Genovese (under Giovanni Giustiniani Longo), Venetian and Sicilian against an Ottoman Turkish army of 180-200.000. These immortal heroes fought till the last moment on the fateful day of the Fall of Constantinople, 29 May 1453.
