look for Xiaomi phones, cheap phones with awesome specs

https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi-phones-80.php
Xiaomi is good, specs of most flag ship phones at a significant discount. Depending on the model, most parts are modulor so things can be replaced easily.

The only downside is MIUI is absolute shit, however this can be replaced with open source android with projects like LineageOS and others. Just check XDA forums first before buying to see if there is community support for the device.

Maybe the older versions of MIUI, but MIUI 12 is pretty good, my brother has it on his redmi 8. They have change a lot of it to make it similar to the Google Pixel "experience" as they call it.

Xiaomi is DA BOMB! Great shit! Only issue (don't know if it still is) is that, in order to preserve battery life Xiaomi absolutely kills anything from running in the background. Kind of annoying sometimes, but still GREAT phones for CHEAP! Paid $230 CAD for mine 2 years ago. Came with 4GB ram, 64GB storage. At the time, most people were getting phones with only 32GBs of storage. Phone has been ROCK SOLID!!! Bought a Samsung to replace it a few months ago. I have NEVER used the M30 because the Xiaomi is THAT GOOD! It also has a feature called Quickball. It found it by accident, but cannot live without it. I have been looking for any custom ROMs for my phone which has Quickball. It seems that ROM developers cannot rip it out of the original ROM to incorporate it into their custom ROMs. There's a similar app from the Google Play Store called Zone Assist. I have installed it to test it, but Xiaomi kills it from running in the background. LOL.
Any way, decided to treat myself to a new phone (because my Xiaomi won't die and it's going on 3 yrs that i've had it actually). Ordered the Xiaomi Poco X3 on sale from Aliexpress. CANNOT WAIT!!!
OP, there are A TON of excellent phones you can buy on the Chinese sites!!! Names you have never heard of but are damn good. As I write this though, I'm thinking it may not be a good idea for you to go down that road. There's too much choice. You'll go crazy like I did before getting my 1st Xiaomi. Plus, you have to be certain that the phone supports the Canadian cell frequencies. Spent 2 months looking at phones on the Chinese selling sites, and some Indian phone sites (I've NEVER seen soooo many names that I didn't know!!!). The Indian market doesn't buy iPhone and Samsung. They have soooooo much choice that will make your head spin! There was even a phone with a fan for internal cooling of the CPU. Prices were very good. I researched everyone that piqued my interest and they were ALL solid phones.
A brand that you can get, which is in N.America is OnePlus. Fantastic phones! A bit pricey now, but fantastic. Sad. Their initial business model to was to make a super phone for the $200 mark when they started out. Apple/Samsung started charging so much, so the lesser known brands had plenty room to increase their prices too.
There were some recent deals on OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 8.
Hope this helps you a bit.
Let us know what you get.

I bought a Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_5_plus_(redmi_note_5)-8959.php
Still works well, i don't use it for much but a new battery can be had for ~$40.

I ordered it off amazon, the phone died in 30 days so I sent it back for a full refund.
Then I ordered one from swiftronics https://swiftronics.ca/collections/xiaomi it appears they overprice things but when I ordered mine it was nearly the same price as amazon.
I'd check amazon and them for prices, Aliexpress may be cheaper but the shipping is usually quite long.

It's lasted for over 2 years now.

That's the EXACT phone I have! LOL
It's my daily driver still. Battery finally showing signs (but not really bad.) Haven't found a reliable source for batteries though. Where did you see the battery? Amazon? Found some there, but looked pretty sketch.
I found this on Amazon too, but they over charge way too much. Shipping from Aliexpress didn't take too long. I've gotten somethings in less that 2 weeks from Ali. With the pandemic holding up shipping now though, i'm afraid how long it will take for my new phone to come.
Swiftronics? Never heard of them. Yikes! At those prices, I'm glad i never heard of them. LOL.

Thanks bud!

Off of this site called witrigs: https://www.witrigs.com/replacement...ttery-replacement-for-xiaomi-redmi-note-5-pro

They have some YouTube videos on how to work on the phone. Haven't heard anything about their reputation though.

I had to pull my phone apart because I cleaned it and too much water go in it. The motherboard had corrosion, so had to clean it up with isoproply alcohol and everything works, except the lower usb and headphone jack is fucked up.
I can charge the phone but the device can't be read by USB on computers. So if the ROM fucks up I gotta throw it away lol. The part is like $10 but never bothered ordering from witrigs plus shipping cost isn't worth it.

I made a mistake, I actually have the redmi note 5 pro, I always get confused.
They have similar names but the devices have completely different camera layout, which is what I use to double check.

I just go by the code name (Whyred). LOL. I think Whyred is the Note 5 Pro, or is it the Redmi 5? LMFAO. I get confused too.
I came across that same site too for the battery. Didn't order because I have NO IDEA about them.

Thanks!

I bought a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 a couple of years ago. It's awesome. It is not a beginner phone, though. I got it through a Chinese site that I get a lot of parts from. It was dead cheap at around $400 after delivery. It took a while, but it is one of the best phones I've ever owned.
It is the biggest phone ever made at 6.9". It has an enormous battery that can keep me going for 4+ days: 5500 mAh!
The downside is that I rooted it to install a better operating system than the stock MIUI that it comes with. That means that there are some issues. I can't use the biometrics to connect to my bank because it is now untrusted. I can't use it as the base unit for my debit/credit card reader for the same reason. There are other little things like the notification light doesn't work for text messages and the camera light isn't synchronized to the camera, so I can't use the flash to take pictures.
Still, the battery life and the size/weight of the thing is way better than any other phone I can imagine.
Oh, there is one other issue. It often doesn't fit into spaces designed to hold modern mobile phones. It's just too big. I'll never find a holder for the car that it'll fit into.
Also, Xiaomi stopped making it for some reason.
"OO! It's so big!"

Size matters?

Hmm I have a samsung galaxy j3 that I use for browsing and apps.

But my new phone is a LG velvet 5g which I love for its picture and video quality. It's a rather large phone but love its sleek design and how lightweight it is

I used to run a Xiaomi note 5 pro, and recently got a Xiaomi note 9s. Both phones were about $150 USD from aliexpress.

I thought I wanted a really big screen so bought the 9s for its 6.7" screen but it is too big for me to use it single-handed without the risk of it just falling out of my hand. My note 5 pro still works and the battery life is still great on it but it is laggy with edge gestures and there are no more android updates for it. The note 9s is faster and no lag with edge gestures. When Android updates stop for the Note 9s I will get another phone, something with about a 6.3 inch OLED display. The LCD on my Note 9s is about the same quality as my note 5 pro, back in 2017/18 that was a pretty nice screen but nowadays it is antiquated.

I've had the Samsung Galaxy S10+ for two years now and I'm still enjoying it. I've recently paired it with the Galaxy Watch 3 to track my longer walks. Haven't seen any need to upgrade to anything newer
