I realize that Pringles is not a food staple but here is an example of greed.

Bought a container in December from one of the food stores that professed to be holding prices or bring them down.

163 g. container for $1.99

When I went to the store yesterday I noticed the price was up to $2.39

Got home and put the new one in a cupboard next to one purchase in December. Guess what. The new container is shorter. It weighs 139g.

Price up 20%. Volume down 17%.

Somebodies making a nice profit...:)

Ya, but asparagus and strawberries are way down. Food prices go up and down all the time.

Maybe someone is trying to tell you that you shouldn't be eating Pringles.

I have 300 Lbs that says I like them...:)

Hmmm... I have a friend in the packaging business who does work for a number of companies that supply to Walmart. He told me years ago that Walmart "encouraged" - Walmart-speak for "forced" - suppliers to package things differently than they would for other stores. Bigger or smaller... it didn't matter. The point was to make it more difficult for consumers to do direct price comparisons. Perhaps this mentality has caught on.

Of course you can always walk past... just don't but the stuff.

Yes your right Stoo
Costco and Sam Clubs also does that. Sizes of stuff so differant that's its hard to compare the price to the regular size you purchase.

ALL of this happenned in the 1970's. I wonder if you are old enough to remember the half empty box of Cheerios? Right now they are pulling this with diapers. Same box has either 108 120 126 or 137 diapers in it and it costs $38.00.

They are doing it with shampoo and even toilet paper. Also, you have the standard re branding going on. Finally to make it really confusing grocery stores constantly re organize the shelves, so you never know where anything is.

This is standard operating procedure for all companies producing "processed" food. Another thing they do is change the ingredients without telling anyone... Have a look at the labels on say something like Peanut butter to see how much of it is ACTUALLY made with peanuts!

Best way to prevent getting hosed by all these companies producing packaged goods is to eat fresh! Sure the prices on that fluctuates as well, but at least you know what you are paying for.

Do you? I have no idea what hormones are in my meat, what preservative are being used, and what pesticides are being sprayed on my fruit. I just found out the other day on a kids show about apples, that they have a thin coat of wax on them to make them 'shine'.

EXCELLENT point player! And yes I have thought about this as well... and aside from growing the food ourselves we have no way of knowing for sure. (One cannot even trust foods that say "Organic" either anymore!) I have read studies about how milk contains more hormones as well... amongst a host of other issues.

I guess my point is that we are minimize the effect by shopping as "fresh" as possible as often as possible.

Myself, I am not so talented... got a brown thumb I guess you would call it. If it isn't grass... I am pretty much guaranteed to kill it!

Which is why the farmers market is the next closest thing for me.
