TORONTO (AP) -- Mike Weir has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow and is likely out for the rest of the season.

Weir told The Canadian Press on Tuesday that he had an MRI exam over the weekend. He plans to rest the elbow and seek treatment to avoid surgery.

The Canadian left-hander had elbow pain before the British Open in July but thought it was tendinitis. A conversation with PGA pro Scott McCarron at last week's Wyndham Championship prompted Weir to seek medical attention.

McCarron told Weir that he had a similar injury but continued to play while getting treatment. That resulted in a complete tear, which required surgery and a year off the tour.

Weir is coming off a season of eight missed cuts. His best finish was sixth at the Bob Hope Classic.

Amen to that...he's a decent guy, he deserves better. It's good to see Duval climbing back up the leader board these days though!

The kid is 40 years old, he's all but done, maybe a few good showings left in him, but that's it. Majors, forget about it, the young guys are taking over, look at the last few majors.

Weir's career is over anyway so this just hets him out of a bad year faster. Now that TSN don't have Weir and that half-canadian Ames....who are they going to hero worship now.

Word from two people i know, one who played at the ProAm this year at St. Georges and the other who is a sports photographer both say he is a prick. Not well liked in the clubhouse and was not very cordial at the ProAm, he's a golfer so what if his elbow is sore put on a brave face and represent your sport better.

MW was wearing a tennis elbow brace for most of the season. He should have shut it down earlier before it got to this. I had tennis elbow years ago and tried to golf: hit one off the hosel and I screamed in pain.
