I am looking for some help.

I am trying to start working out. Been scouring the internet for help on workout routines. There is tones of information on what exercises to do in what order, how many reps and rest times between reps. What I am having problems with is the weight and what combination is needed for lean muscle. I don’t want to injure myself and I don’t want to get bulky. Right now I am about 5’9” and 135lbs. As far as what I want to look like, I always admired Michal Jordan’s game but Scotty Pippen definitely had the physic.

Hoping there are either those personally knowledgeable or maybe even professionally that can help out. Perhaps there are others here that would like the same kind of advice.

Seems I have a "short" agenda today...

Dude, you`re 5` 9"??? And you wanna get to be like Mike or Scotty?

Scotty Pippen is reportedly 6` 8", and Michael (depending on who you believe) is anywhere from 6` 4" to 6`6"... This being the case you have some work ahead of you...

Oh, and if you`re looking for a serious answer... PM this guy... he knows a thing or two about this sortta thing. **insert winky face smiley here**

If you want lean muscle then you want to do lower weight levels and more reps per set. Bulk is usually built with the opposite strategy of heavy weight and low numbers of reps.

Of course, the only reps I do now are fork curls at the dinner table.

Cute, but I see you know what I mean. Scotty`s arms were bad ass.

I am just tired of looking like Boomhower

Sent off a PM. May not be able to get the height but a muscle change would be great.

I know what he means.

He wants the Pipen look on his frame.

Actually it`s a good realistic goal.

Food management is probably 75% of achieving your goals depending on your ability to handle carbohydrates of course.

Anyways don`t have to tell CG that he is definately someone who talks the talk and walks the walk.

Posts pics to boot.

I know a very good trainer you could contact, Not the typical gym rat trainer.

He is expensive, but working with him to get the base of your workout down, and then venturing off on your own would be a great idea.

Then once in awhile touching base and learning new techniques / diets plans.
Thanks Emm. I love this girl. Never met her but she is active on the boards in some good productive ways.
Nice idea but the main expense I would be having is the traveling to see him. Don't live in the T dot or GTA area. The driving would be a pain.

The Scotty Pippen thing was an ultimate goal. Saw this and I would not mind starting from here:

Anywhere between TI and Scotty Pippen would be great.
Want to be able to take off my shirt by the pool and have the girls look at me the way I look at them.
Maybe then when I do see Emm, she jumps me and there is a mad make-out scene worthy of a teenage movie flick or something. :)

Lyle McDonald

Get some of Lyle's stuff. He knows diet like nobody else.

If you want to develop strength without mass (this is what I'm trying to do) study Pavel Tsatouline who's apparently the go-to guy for special forces types (probably marketing cr*pola)

dragondoor.com

I don't know much about bodybuilding or Crossfit

I disagree

You have to be in shape. The trainer cannot help you if you cannot do anything

So buy "body building for dummies" get into some sort of decent shape then pay the big bucks to the trainer and get your monies worth

Yoga, dude if you have the $ a trainer is absolutely the way to go.

Reading a book while beneficial isn't a substitute for hands on guidance.

It's hard to learn the proper form of complex movements like squats, deadlifts, cleans etc from looking at pictures or vids off the net.

Yes exactly, Most who learn on their own will end up with serious muscle imbalances later in life, which lead to many other problems.

It is best to learn how to do everything correctly from the start, otherwise you will be paying someone to fix you later.

trainers are also good at pushing you to your limits, where you may have stopped and not fit in that last repitition if he was not there to motivate you!
She is wise beyond her years.
check out these instructional videos and you'll know how guys like pippen got where they are

Pippen couldn't do those workouts in his wildest dreams.

A couple things to get some perspective.

1. Muscle, by definition is "lean".

2. Don't even give two calories of energy towards worrying about getting "bulky". Unless you work REALLY REALLY hard specifically at building massive bulk , it just ain't gonna happen. Period.

Muscle is strengthened and "built" by being damaged by working the muscle to a point where the work damages the muscle. The body's repair process rebuilds the damaged muscle fibres and this results in incrementally larger muscle fibres.

This repair process requires time and materials. Time-wise it needs about 48 hours. Materials-wise you require some carbohydrates right after the workout to avoid the body using other proteins to rebuild. Something simple like fruit or yogurt. Not too much or you get fat. Then you need to have a diet higher in protein and some simple amino acids which help to provide longer term muscle building blocks.

Post workout carbs prevent muscle being metabolized for repair.

Protein is the building block for rebuilding bigger and better.

As for muscle "toning" versus "building" , NO difference. Exercising builds and strengthens muscle. The degree of how hard you work out and reps versus weight is the difference.

To start, simply grab some light weights and do some standard exercises like arm curls, presses, etc. Use a weight that you can easily do 10 reps. Take a minute after ten reps and do it again. Then move on to the next exercise.

Don't work the same muscle the next day.

Take it easy to get started and see if you can enjoy the process rather than looking at as work.

If you can afford it after a week or so of puttering around yourself, get a trainer for a few days to refine your workout.

MUSIC helps a lot too!

Thanks for all the info...couldn't agree more about the music.

All this time I've been having protein after, not carbs.

And it's aggravating that without changing anything else with my diet, I've gained six pounds since I gave up frosting. and swiss rolls. and brownies with peppermint patties melted on top.

Not pizza, though, I have to draw the line somewhere.
