Someone I know wants to register a domain and eventually create a website for a small business (not related to this board). This person is adept enough to create the website and maintain it, although some help might be needed at the beginning.

Any ideas or suggestions of local companies?

GoDaddy.com (lots and lots and lots of expansion options).

My advice is always register your domain name separately from your web hosting company (thats how they tie you in). When separate, changing webhosting companies is a breeze. The FREE domain name is what ties you to them usually.

Tucows.com is based in Toronto (registed at 96 Mowat Ave, Toronto), and has an extensive reseller network for Domains and Hosting services. You could be dealing with a company located anywhere, but with some local affiliation.

Sibername.com is HQ'ed in Ottawa, with a data center in Montreal for hosting. I've used them, and I'm quite satisfied with their services.

For domain registration and DNS services (other than web hosting), you can use easyDNS.ca, located in Toronto (Dufferin Street).
