First saw James live doing the "Live At The Apollo" set, pre-funk, around Christmas 1963 at a field house concert at the University Of Minnesota with no seating. It blew my mind. My 3 friends and I were the only white faces there.

Next day I ran to a record store on Hennepin St. in Minneapolis asking who was this killer vocalist with the great band doing "Please, Please, Please" amongst other great songs. They sold me the "Live At The Apollo" LP, which was on my turntable for months. I saw him live 3 times after that. (and once at a waiting area at the La Guardia airport, all by himself, while we were both waiting for a flight to Montreal. He didn't recognize me lol, despite my staring for more than just a moment...)

The only time I saw James Brown was Feb 18, 1983, Barrymore's, Ottawa, Small venue (400) and as usual JB did not disappoint.
My ex wife was from Sherbrooke but worked and lived in Montreal and she remembered that James Brown used to play Montreal on New Years eve pretty regularly billed as an evening in Black and White (tuxedos??). Apparently he loved the Montreal crowds and they loved him even more.
@xmontrealer do you recall that?
He was supposed to play Ottawa early Jan 2006 and friends had tickets but the show was cancelled. They could have got a refund but decided to hold on to the tickets

Massey Hall .. Past his prime but great to see him perform in a small intimate venue.
