Ways to avoid $6000 insurance?

Aside from your homicidal tendencies and reckless behaviour, have you checked whether part of your rate comes from driving a high-risk make&model? Young guys driving sporty little cars always get a higher rate. What would your rate be on a 2006 Crown Victoria?

Save a little more by dropping the collision coverage, perhaps save a little more by raising your deductible to $5k. Of course, that means that you'll have to write off the car after the first fender-bender, and you'll be out $5K if you're at fault.

edit: here are the theft & collision rates for all the major auto brands from the IBC: http://www.ibc.ca/en/Car_Insurance/documents/hcmu/2010/HCMU_E_2010.pdf

The Ford Taurus and Buick Regal both look like safe choices. Make sure to get the antitheft device.

$6000 a year for 3 years is $18000. That is enough to buy a car! I would rather buy my friend a car, and have him insure it. He pays the insurance for me every month for three years. At the end of the three years (let's say he pays $7000 for three years, he gets to keep the car. We both profit.
If you do this, the insuer will deny all coverage and come aback at you for all its incurred costs.

Besides, this tells me you're more than a bad driver, but have no qualms acting in bad faith.

That wouldn't work unless he was the one driving you around. The moment you get behind the wheel in a capacity beyond once in a blue moon, it's your driving record that is going to matter.

Just get rental car coverage on your credit card and you're set.
If you rent year round you might find that your CC only covers so many days [30 or 60] of coverage. You might want to check that out.

North of GTA
Although the OP has admitted to the increase being his own fault due to careless driving that is not always the case.
My insurance while living in Brampton was pretty steady at about $1200 per year. Then it increased to $1800 then $2500 and finally to $3900 in consecutive years.
I called the insurance company and they said that the insurance companies do not have to justify the reasons for the rate increases. I have maintained a clean record over those years so she blamed the increase on the fact that I lived in a high-risk neighborhood.

Six months later I moved north of the GTA and since then my rates have been steady at between $1200-$1400. Information given to me by a friend who is a bank official is that as soon as you move north of highway #9 your rates will drastically drop. I work close to home but my neighbor travels 140kms to work every day in Brampton and pays much less than I did when I lived and worked in Brampton. My friend is not being dishonest as he fully discloses his driving stats to his agent.

That's bullshit if it's true.

I will have to pay $500 a month for insurance very soon.

I was thinking of ways to avoid this. Any recommendations?
I know someone who was married with one shared car. When the number of accidents threatened to put them into facility insurance on their next renewal, they purchased a cheap used second car. Upon renewal, the insurance company interpreted the number of accidents as being an acceptable level for having two drivers and two insured cars, and they avoided facility.

So, rent a car. Your alternative is marriage.

As 2 suggested either public transit or move out of province. Going the illegal way is going to cost you up front and later when you get caught.

I am thinking of public transport, plus renting a car when needed. I plan to lie low for three years until the convictions are dropped off my record. The question is, will insurance companies care that my car was not insured for three years?

They won't care about the car but you will be consider a new driver in 3 years and pay new driver rates.

I didn't bother reading any of the responses. What you are proposing is called:

Non Material Representation (A Lie)

If you fuck somebody up, fuck yourself up then you will get jacked. Anyone who insures you will not want to foot the bill for a 1,000,000.00 plus claim after a serious accident. They routinely and thoroughly investigate, and when they do all of your illusions will be just that, and you will spend the rest of your life trying to pay off the claim to the people you harmed.

Which would still be way lower than $6000.
I am not sure what it would cost but it would be lower then $6K but it is also 3 years without driving your car. Should get a drivers abstract and go talk to a good broker. The broker could give you an idea what the different scenarios might cost you. Depending on the timing of tickets/driving events on your driver's abstract, your life on F.A. might be limited to only a few months.

Please do not let anyone dissuade you from not driving...

I'd say it would be somewhere between $3000 - $4000. Before going that route, I'd find out how long you'd be paying the high rates on your current policy. If it's only one year before it drops dramatically, I'd just foot the bill for the one year rather than pay new driver rates for years to come. My sister paid more than $9k (total) in her first three years of driving with a clean record, and still more than $6k in the three years since...and she's a woman. So judge which route will cost you less in the long run and go for it.

Wow $500 is a lot, don't race, speed and maintain your distance between cars.

Everyone speeds. Almost everyone. The difference between a good and bad driver is in the other two you mentioned and in being observant.
