How do you reconcile these two statements, were the Indian Government and the Government of East Bengal knowingly encouraging the mistreatment of patients?
I think it quite improbable that the Indian government knew what was going on at the time, and they should no more be considered responsible than the Canadian govt, should be held accountable for the 47 child murders by Digoxin attributed nurse in Sick Kids Hospital back in 1980-81.**
If you recall, an arrest was made in that case, and the deaths immediately stopped, but prosecution was halted because of lack of evidence, and of course an understandable motive.
However, history is rife with reports of other murders by other nurses and other caregivers.
So-called Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome, is often cited as a reason, and is also attributed to cases of mothers victimizing, (sometimes resulting in the deaths of), their own children.
"Perpetrators are willing to fulfill their need for positive attention by hurting their own child, thereby assuming the sick role by proxy. At times, they are also able to assume the hero role and garner still more positive attention, by appearing to care for and 'save' their child."
These things are elusive and hard to notice, because people tend not to look for them, and often not believe the evidence of their own eyes when they do see patterns.
A visitor to MT's dungeons woud presume that the lack of morphine for example, was attributable to the likelihood that morphine was unaffordable or otherwise unavailable.** It would never occur to a sane person that it was deliberately being withheld for deranged spiritual/ideological/personal reasons.
Mama T runs her congregation exactly like a cult.** High carbs, and not enough of them, lack of rest, social isolation and absolute obedience.
Once in a while, someone breaks away, and talks about life inside, but their voices are drowned out by the relentless media whitewash.
