She seems to be very aggressive. She had approached other customers as well and told the customer that she would call the police if she saw his dog in the car again. She should of contacted her manager. Workers like that are too overbearing and customers dont like it.

I agree with the manager that she should report it to him/her before doing anything. But she wasn't working at that time so that is an interesting point. Imho should have called the police and let them handle it.

Not trying to be a chicken but it is dangerous confronting people about stuff!
she wasn't working when she reported it. later on when she was working the manager gave her an order as bosses do for employees and the employee said she would ignore the order.

I don't see how he can give her an order to do something if she is not on company time when it happens again.. however, one can be fired for their actions whilst not on the clock. ie if rude to a customer / confronting a customer while one is identifiable as an employee
Even if he gave her an order and she said no regarding her off time which she is totally in her right to do she now has a target on her back and he will look for reasons to fire her.

What if the guy hits her with a baseball bat when she confronts him? Will she be entitled to workers compensation? Paid for time off? She should have advised the manager as she was previously instructed. Walmart, McDonalds and those types of employers do not want independent free thinkers on staff.

Reports are that she had seen the dog jump out of the car twice before the owner went into the store. Then, the owner rolled the window up, leaving it open just an inch or so and went into the store.

She says that she called police, who arrived and went into the store to look for the individual.

Reports say that when the driver was driving off afterwards, she confronted him and he ultimately shouted back that he would never shop at Wal-Mart again.

This indicates that, contrary to her reports, she was clearly identified to the customer as a Wal-Mart employee, and that she confronted the individual directly (rather than allowing Wal-Mart management and the police, who were already involved, to deal with the situation).

So quick to prove others wrong you don't even get all the facts straight.

She was outside in the break area with other walmart employees when he drove up and made a general comment to the ladies all together. That is when the employee said to him he should not leave the dog in the car. He told her to mind her own business, she informed him the cops were called. He then said he was not coming back.

She was fired because she told her manager that she would not come to him next time. That she would simply call the police again. He said then you are fired.

They do not want employers calling the police all the time and they have the right to expect their employees to first handle things according to their policies. Then if that is not enough allow a manager or higher tier supervisor to assist employees with issues and then lastly being taking things into your own hands and calling the police. It is a process that she refused to follow so she got fired. I don't feel sorry for her and do not think she should get her job back if she follow the rules.

Do they have a right to ask that employees not call police to report a crime? Really?! So they could be murdering people and growing drugs and anybody who called police could be fired for insubordination?

That seems incredibly dubious. I think the manager was way over the line. I just don't believe it is legal to prevent people from reporting crime.

I also think the woman had a bit of a chip on her shoulder and could have handled it better herself. Much better to work things out amicably than fight in court, even when you are right.

This is the sort of problem that only results when both parties are real assholes.

I don't work at Walmart so I do not know their policies. If that is their policy then it is what it is. She was fired for refusing to follow policy IN THE FUTURE. If she is refusing this one policy then what is to stop her form refusing another one that may be more dangerous.

I would have fired her ass to if she blatantly told me she would refuse company policy for any reason. I want and will only have employee work for me who will follow the rules.

All big corps have clauses in employment contracts saying things like even when not at work you have to be careful what you say

On another message board (one related to my job) I actually put a disclaimer into my sig because some utter morons complained & management said the belief was I was representing my own ideals as those of the company
(So as an analogy, if I was a SP, I posted my personal views on a client trying to rip me off, then client calls back agency complaining that the agency (through me) was bad mouthing him on a public forum)

There are tons of examples like this, everything from kids getting suspended for fb posts to companies firing employees

You agree with everything I said, and say that I got it wrong? Wow.

You agree that she was identified as a Wal-Mart employee when she confronted the customer.

And despite your claim, police had already arrived and entered the store to look for him: there was no reason for her to tell him that "police had been called". Instead, she had confronted him about leaving a dog in a hot vehicle.

Why she was fired is purely conjecture on your part - Wal-Mart have correctly respected her privacy in that regard, as the law requires. Never have Wal-Mart said that they would not call the police, nor that the employee should not call the police. They have only implied that their policy appears to be that management should be informed prior to doing so. Presumably, management will then determine if the employee should call police, if management should call police, or if police are not required under the circumstances.

Again, if the company policy is blatantly illegal....

How is it illegal to tell employees to come to management? Lol.

They never said she is not allowed to call the police. They said policy is to go to management. She refused. They refused to continue to employ her.

What is illegal?

I bet the poor dog appreciated it!

Waiting for "The Wal Mart Manager" and the EQUALLY inept and disinterested police to show up, what, maybe a half hour later?
