VWs are great when everything's running well. When it requires a repair (which will happen more often than a good Japanese vehicle), it's going to be expensive and a PITA. In my experience German engineers are in love with their work. They'll install a pump and extra piping rather than just relocate a reservoir for simplicity's sake.

I would hesitate on the Corolla. I bought a 2010 Corolla new and have had several issues with it. It has not been a good car for me. I have had to get some of the plastic interior parts replaced, a window seal replaced, the radio is really fucked up(and I have never seen or heard anybody ever before with that problem)and the dealer has not been very willing to do the warranty work. I have had the car for 3 years now and it has 60,000 clicks on it. For me, the Corolla is a lot less than what I thought it was.

I would pick a VW over a Corolla .. First off for cosmetic reasons .. I find the Corolla on the boring side .. I don't think VW are as nearly as expensive to fix as you think .. In addition, some of the issues in the past ie: electronic aren't as relevant to the new VW's ... Are you considering buying new or used ?
